basic installation error

im trying to install internet explorer and steam in wine, but each time i try to run wine it gives me a "Unable to find a volume for file extraction. please verify that you have proper permissions" but i ran the program with root and gave the .wine folder full permissions.

Don't do that. Steam does not require IE and does not work properly with it on Wine. Remove ~/.wine directory with "rm -rf ~/.wine" command and follow the howto on AppDB.
