downloading WINE not from a linux machine.

Post by antemon »

I'm currently using the latest stable release and that computer does not have an internet connection so I can't use the update manager/s and have to rely on a windows machine.

I know I can download wine over at http://www.winehq.org/site/download however trying to install the *.deb file coughs up a dependency issue. something about binfmt-support.

and to be clear, I am doing a bit of homework.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=746732
was able to get binfmt-support, but that had a dependency issue as well.
currently backtracking stuff at http://packages.ubuntu.com/, writing down files, their dependencies and their dependencies etc etc, and downloading them piece by piece.

can anyone help?

ps, yeah I was able to drag my PC over to a friend's house, but I had another issue and can't get passed GRUB, no one seems interested in my thread :( and so a reinstall is the only thing I can come up with
if anyone can help with that ( http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=754848 ) I'd give you a cookie. I've already got KDE and XFCE in my machine and a reinstall will wipe them out...

That's going to make things quite hard.

If you knew what you were doing, you could probably fix this,
but it's much easier to reinstall.

You can download Wine packages from here http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/
tried that.
figured the sudo command/s had html address on them, trial and error, got there, got the deb file, dependency issue.

a reinstall seems the only option, but if anyone can suggest a solution I'll that would be great since I can't get the machine over at my friend's house anymore and i wanted to try out KDE and XFCE.

something about binfmt-support.
Try installing binfmt-support first, then install wine.

This isn't Windows: No need to reinstall over something so trivial (I'm still
on my first Debian install from 1997, the install has outlived 8 entire
computer systems now). Just follow the advice apt gives you; in this case,
install binfmt-support.

I think I didn't make myself clear.

1.PC with ubuntu does not have an internet connection.
2.i figured the sudo commands over at the download page for debian had internet address at it, trial and errored my way around and got to budgetdedicated.
3.downloaded the .deb file, ran it, coughed up a dependency issue.
4.got a hold of the dependency issue, but that had a dependency issue as well.

bactracking dependencies and their dependencies.

I guess to say it bluntly, does anyone have a wine deb with all the dependencies? I don't even care if it's the latest release as the stuff I'll be tinkering it with is pretty old and in the DB of wine-able applications.

the other problem, the one where I might have to reinstall, was caused by another thing I did ( http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=754848 )
kinda related since I already had wine installed but a reinstall of ubuntu will wipe it out.

I'd rather not drag the PC back to my friend's house to leech off his connection...

I agree, it's a pain to install things without an internet connection.

I just wrote a script to compute transitive dependencies of a debian package.
(It's kind of approximate, since sometimes there are alternatives, in which
case it just picks the first one.)
perl alldeps.pl wine
outputs

adduser busybox-initramfs cpio debconf debconf-i18n debianutils
e2fsprogs esound-common gcc-4.2-base initramfs-tools klibc-utils
libasound2 libaudio2 libaudiofile0 libc6 libdb4.2 libdb4.5 libdbus-1-3
libdrm2 libesd-alsa0 libexif12 libgcc1 libgcrypt11 libgl1-mesa-glx
libglu1-mesa libgnutls13 libgpg-error0 libgphoto2-2 libgphoto2-port0
libhal1 libice6 libjpeg62 libklibc liblcms1 libldap2
liblocale-gettext-perl libltdl3 liblzo2-2 libncurses5 libopencdk8
libpam-foreground libpam-modules libpam-runtime libpam0g libsasl2-2
libsasl2-modules libselinux1 libsepol1 libsm6 libssl0.9.8 libstdc++6
libtasn1-3 libtext-charwidth-perl libtext-iconv-perl
libtext-wrapi18n-perl libusb-0.1-4 libvolume-id0 libx11-6 libx11-data
libxau6 libxdamage1 libxdmcp6 libxext6 libxfixes3 libxml2 libxslt1.1
libxt6 libxxf86vm1 login lsb-base module-init-tools ncurses-bin passwd
perl-base perlapi-5.8.7 perlapi-5.8.8 procps sed udev volumeid wine
x11-common zlib1g

So find out which of those packages you're missing, those are the
ones you need. Maybe. :-)

Here's the script, too.

Such a thing just doesn't exist. Even if it did exist, it would have to
conflict with all the other packages wine is including that it normally
depends on: It would be an even bigger headache than chasing dependencies by
hand.

Let apt do it's thing. For that, you will need an internet connection, or a
relatively complete set of CDs from your distribition. At least in the
Debian world, you only need the first CD in the set to install if you're
online, you only need the complete 12-odd CD set if you're installing to a
computer with no connection. If Ubuntu doesn't produce a CD set that
contains all available packages, it's probably not the right distribution for
the offline machine unless you /like/ hunting down dependencies like it's a
Red Hat box...
