Counter-Strike Craches

Post by bluepepsi »

Hey,

I have installed Ubuntu a few days ago, since my experience with Windows Vista has been horrible. I decided to run steam using wine, and I was also going to run Counter-Strike. So I installed wine first using the following command, "sudo apt-get install wine". Then downloaded steam and installed it. When I launched Steam, my friend's names were very hard to read. It's like it was a mess. (By the way, I did put tahoma.ttf font in drive_c/Windows/Fonts) Not mentioning it was very laggy. So then I downloaded Counter-Strike, and ran it. When I first opened it and clicked on "Find Servers" it crashed. So i had to restart the computer. I ran it again and again and had no luck.
Maybe I did something wrong when I installed it?
These are my specifications,
Processor: AMD Phenom 1.8 GHz Quad Core Processor
Video card: ATI Radeon HD3200 1Gb (If that matters)
Memory: 4 GB DDR2
Operating System Version: Ubuntu Desktop 9.04, 64 bit

Do you have any suggestion on what is wrong or what I should do? Please keep in mind that I am really new to ubuntu, and I do not know what some of the things might be. So please be specific when you tell me something.
Thanks

ATI has pretty crappy video drivers...make sure you've got the latest
drivers for it, and upgrade wine to 1.1.25.

I installed the driver that ubuntu offered me. When I downloaded and installed the latest "official" drivers from AMD site, it downgraded it, instead of upgrading it. I couldn't even run Normal Visual Effects because of it.
By the way, I successfully ran Half Life 2 Deathmatch (well with a lot of bugs). So the problem shouldn't be in performance, since cs doesn't even need opengl running. It runs in software mod too. But just to make it clear, I did run cs in opengl.

ATI

I've tried the drivers that came with Ubuntu and the official site ones, I've used Envy to get me drivers too and none work. What I find interesting is wine can run Half-Life 2 but not Counter-Strike : Source so there is something wrong going on in CS. If I find something I'll let you know but right now I can't think of anything really to fix it.
CPU : AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-core 2.6 GHz
Graphics : ATI Radeon HD 3200
OS : Ubuntu 9.04 32-bit

I think it has something to do with an update with either CS or ATI drivers cause Counter-Strike : Source was working perfectly fine last week but I reformated my PC and now it just doesn't work at all.

I see you have the same video card as I do. What drivers did you install? The ones that ubuntu offered to you, or did you find them?
