In the latest release I counted at least 80 patches that improve wined3d in several different ways, which is absolutely awesome! But I'm wondering where this sudden interest in this specific part comes from (as well as all the sudden translation improvements)... Did the inclusion of WineD3D in other open source projects like VirtualBox suddenly spark some major interest in improving the D3D implementation?
Keep doing a great job, everyone! I'm starting to really love Wine and everyone working on it.

The reason is more simple then that - few most active in d3d area develops were done with their summer exams.
It would be cool if someone could make a benchmark between say 1.1.20 and 1.1.25, it would be interesting to see how the latest additions and fixes contributed to both image quality and performance of various games!

You're welcome to do for the games you're interested in, and report the results on Wine's AppDb
That would allow to spot potential regression as well as an additional benefit.
