Quicken 2 for Windows

Post by dgs »

Hi,

I am new to Linux (Fedora 11) and Wine (1.1.18) and am trying to eliminate going back to windows to run certain applications. Please forgive any transgressions in this post as I assure you they are unintentional. By the way, Wine (1.1.23) causes Quicken to crash on start up. Wine (1.1.18) works just fine.

I have spent a couple of weeks trying to figure out what is going on. There are plenty of Quicken posts, but nothing before V7. This is V2 which is 16 bit. I have succeeded in installing Quicken in Wine and it mostly works. The parts that are not working are fonts and printing. I installed fonts by using winetricks and selecting all fonts.

First, fonts - all the fonts show up in the Quicken's printer setup, however, the sample display only shows part of the letters (like the font is too big). This occurs even if I select the smallest size, size 6. This occurs on all fonts across the board. By the way, display fonts are fine. It is only print fonts that have this problem.

Next, printing If I try to print from Quicken, an error dialog box appears with the following message: "The data for this report will not fit on the page. Either the fonts selected are too large or the scrolling factor for the device is too large." The printer then ejects the correct number of pages for the report. By the way, I have tried printing from Notepad in Wine and it works just fine.

Finally, the following errors show up in the command line window:

fixme:psdrv:PSDRV_ExtEscape GETSETPRINTORIENT not implemented (data (nil))!

Any help or guidance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

This is what we call a regression. The range of versions is what I
consider too wide to discover where the problem that causes Quicken to
break (btw, what version are you really using, there is no release
called Quicken 2 that I know of, but I can call Intuit to find out, its
a local call.) You might want to try and find Wine 1.1.19, 1.1.20,
1.1.21 or 1.1.22 to see where Quicken stops running. It is possible to
run a series of tests, called regression tests and this will help find
the code update in Wine that caused this problem. If you are willing to
do so, there is a web page dedicated to this purpose.

16 bit programs may or may not work properly with Wine.

This means the ability to change print orientation (Portrait versus
Landscape) is not implemented, yet. This should not affect the ability
for you to print a document, but may affect your ability to print
'sideways'.

Quicken 2 for Windows

Post by dgs »

Hi,

I assure you that I am running Quicken 2 for Windows. Both the splash screen and the about dialog box show "Quicken 2 for Windows". It shows a copyright date of 1992 and was the first windows version of Quicken. The install media are floppy disks.

Thank you for the explanation of the "fixme" error message.

As for regression testing, I am an ordinary user, not a developer so I am probably not a good choice for this.

You did not mention fonts at all in your reply. Is there any advice or comments you want to make on them?

I really appreciate your quick reply.

Thanks.

I unusually install the MS Core Fonts which I use Dan Kegel/Austin
English's winetricks script for. That is because native fonts on
MacIntosh computers are not natively used with Apple's X11 product and
thus do not appear with Wine.

Please familiarize yourself with the Frequently Asked Questions section
of Wine HQ for hints on how to get, install and use winetricks.

You might simply test with wine-1.18, 1.19... until you find the first non-working version.
After that, you could add an entry in Wine's bugzilla describing your problem, first Wine version showing the problem, ...
This way, it may (or may not) eventually be fixed by a developer.

Alternatively, you could downgrade your Wine using your distrib's package manager to 1.1.18

Quicken 2 for Windows

Hi,

Thank you for the replies. I mentioned in my initial post that I installed the fonts through winetricks - a great utility script. Also, I have already "downgraded" wine to V1.1.18 on my Fedora 11 installation and will not upgrade if I can get my windows applications working in wine.

I guess I was unclear in my earlier posts, and I apologize for that. What I was trying to get is some insight into what my options are in getting Quicken 2 to recognize the correct scaling factors for the fonts and/or print device (see error message in my initial post). In addition, I am not sure that the printer (HP 960C inkjet - directly connected to the PC) is set up properly in wine since I do not get any reply to clicking on the printer "settings button" in Quicken 2. I created the symbolic link as the Wine Users Guide directed and tested by printing a test page in Notepad which worked. I am left with the feeling that there must be something else I need to do.

Sorry if I am rambling a bit.

Thanks.
