Shades of Doom

Post by Storm Dragon »

Hi,
I had someone who can see help install some games in Wine. The games
work great except for shades of Doom. It starts correctly, but when the
game should begin, it freezes. It requires DirectX8 to work. It
actually did work once for a few minutes, then, it froze. Will someone
good with Wine Please install Shades of Doom and help figure out what's
going wrong?
I am using Ubuntu 9.04 with the version of Wine from its repositories.
A demo of Shades of Doom can be downloaded from:
http://www.gmagames.com/
The installer works as expected. When the game starts, press enter 3
times. At this point the game should start, but instead, I get the
rather cryptic message:
2 0 1 7
After that message the game freezes.
This game is for blind people, so if you get game sounds but no picture,
that means the game is working. If you press the spacebar you should
hear a gun firing.
Thanks for any help
Storm

I downloaded the demo. It installs and runs without any problems in 1.1.23.

Hi,
When you tried the game did you actually play it for any length of time?
The reason I ask, is it works up until I enter a door, then it seems to
freeze up. If you find the same problem is there any way to fix it or
wil I just have to wait for the next release?
thanks
PS If you haven't tested it but would like to do so, when the game
starts, press up arrow to walk. You will be told of a door in 8 or so
feet along with a beeping sound. Press the up arrow repeatedly to walk
in single steps until the beeping lowers in pitch. When this change
happens, press control left arrow to turn toward the door and press and
hold up arrow to walk to it. At this point, I get three beeps, and the
game sort of freezes. It isn't possible to move, although tab and enter
seem to do something. If you press q to quit, it freezes completely.
