Half-Life starts fine with sound, but freeze on start game

Post by The-DarkLord »

Hello again :)

I have installed Half-Life through wine. As reported in appdb it works without trouble.
When I start it with sound (alsa), it freezes during intro logo. Sound goes on but nothing happens.
When I start it using oss and oss IS ALREADY USED, i have no sound but game dont freeze during intro logo.
Starting the game with --console and alsa, there is no intro logo and it starts with sound, i can use the menu and stuff. So thats my choice :)

Now my problem:
Wenn i change the grafic settings to opengl and lets say 1024x768 as resolution, nothing happens... i can remember in windows it got reload with new resolution. When i quit game and start again, the menu says i run the settings i have chosen but it seems still 640x480.
When i try to start a game it opens that loading logo and try to pull up that picture (as it does in windows) but then it crashes.
Edit: I just tested it to see what error-msg is the output of wine but it freezes and sound of game starts (but it dont pull up that loading screen).

Any suggestions?

Best regards Dark

For sound:
Console output please ;]

If you don't know what I'm talking about simply start terminal, cd to
Half-Life dir and run it with:

wine exe (or where exe is the exe file name of Half-life)

Now when hl crash, terminal will be full of... something ;] - paste it here.

For graphics:

If I remember correctly – I had a problem similar to yours – I found out
later that every time I opened some menu, hl created new window for it and I
had to switch between those windows to get everything working... try alt+tab
while you are in video options and see if there are any confirmation boxes
(“Are you sure you want to set this graphioc mode?”) there that are not
visible (behind current window) – I don't know if this is still a problem.

Anyway if I remember correctly – starting HL in virtual desktop fixed this
(you can always set everything you want and then restart game without
virtual desktop)

No it doesn't change for the menu, it stays @ 640x480 until you get back to the game.

Make sure your OpenGL really works, that you gave required resolution configured with X11 (run xrandr to verify).

For another game (Heavy Metal FAKK2) that resolution works...

glxinfo says "direct rendering yes" and some opengl games work, direct linux games or e.g. fakk2 what uses opengl too. But while installing cedega for testing i figured out, that the 3d accel test doesnt work! OpenGL is fine but it seems i have no d3d. Can that be a reason? But as hl support opengl it must work without 3d3 too ^^

How can i find out, if OpenGL works fine with wine? Is there a command or something?

Which version of cedega? I remember that D3D test always failed for me ;]
but I always had acceleration anyway – don't depend on this too much.

What card do you have?

Generally, if DirectRendering is YES that means that you have acceleration.
Older Cedega may fail to work on never Geforce cards (or rather newer
drivers) but this is not directly related to direct rendering (and there is
simple workaround for this).

If OpenGl works in Linux it will work in wine – how good will it work is a
different matter ;]

For example, I have tested older cards like Voodoo3 – and I was only able to
play OpenGL based games – in DX games there were many, many errors and wine
often crashed. Of course if you have Radeon or GeForce it should work just
fine (well... with Radeon pixel shaders may still be messy but other then
that...)

P.S

You still didn't posted console output...

Test it with something simple, like win32 port of glxgears (google for wglgears.exe).

Hello :)

I have a HP Compaq nx7300 with onboard intel grafics. Depending output from
glxinfo:
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) 945GM 20061017 x86/MMX/SSE2

Here you have the output from terminal. Game crashing after loadingscreen,
when hl try to rise that screen up and start game.

Hmmm from what I read here (what is on wine-mailing list) many times...
Intel drivers are quit messy and that may be the problem, however I must ask
– did you patched HL to latest version? (Yes I know this is many years old,
but this may still fix some issues). As for sound problems – you have
PulsAudio? Disable it. In fact disable or kill any and all sound daemons you
may have (ESD, ARTS and so on). In winecfg set driver to alsa, check “sound
emulation”, try lowering sound acceleration to emulation. As for OpenGL
problems try running in D3D or even software (we will see if any works).

Also console output for crash with Valve intro (no -console switch) may be
useful.

Also which distro do you have? Which wine version? Which version of HL
(steam/nonsteam)?

Always try to provide as much info as you can.

I have no Sound problems, also no pulse audio is running/installed.

I have Kubuntu 8.04 Hardy
Wine 1.00
Game Version 45/1.1.08

I tried to start without console and it works, it just hangs some seconds but later i came to the menu. So the only problem is to start a game. I think it must be a problem with opengl somehow...

Wine 1.0 is ancient. Upgrade to 1.1.22. http://www.winehq.org/site/download

Very likely. Intel cards are vastly underpowered, making up the
difference with CPU power on windows. Their linux drivers don't do
this, however, so you only get the weak card power.

Upgrade to an Nvidia card.

You could try switching to pure OpenGl emulation - just set your drivers to
vesa insetad of intel or whetever you are using. This will of course be too
slow to be playable - but at least you should be able to find out if your
crash is drivers related.
P.S
Have you tried modes other then OpenGL (D3D, SOFTWARE)?

How can i set my driver tu pure OpenGL emulation?
When i set the game to software, i can hear the sound but screen is black.
In the terminal, there is often that "fixme:xrandr:X11DRV_XRandR_SetCurrentMode Cannot change screen BPP from 32 to 16"
Can that be related to the crashes?

By the way, in Cedega i can play with software, but OpenGL also crashes the game...

Theoretically... however I don't think that is the case. To change the
driver you will have to edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf, Look for section
“Device” it should look more or less like this:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Generic Video Card"
Driver "nvidia"
EndSection

Now where you have “nvidia” (in yours xorg.conf this will say something
different... intel maybe?) change it to “vesa” so it looks like this:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Generic Video Card"
Driver "vesa"
EndSection

Save and restart xserver (sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart (kdm if you are using
kubuntu)). I think Intel drivers use DRI+mesa for direct rendering so
setting driver to vesa should switch you to indirect mesa rendering. Note:
this will be slow as hell, this is for testing only. When you are done
testing simply change back “driver” to what was there earlier and restart
xorg.

Ah yea ok, i'm familar with xorg :)
I just ask, maybe there is another command or something to enable...

Ok i will test gameplay with mesa later when i'm at home.
If that works, then its a intel driver fault you think?
