Running WavePad with wine gives an error message

I'm trying to run WavePad (for windows) on ubuntu 8.10 via wine but get an error message that nls.exe has encountered a problem and needs to shut down- actually it never opens.
As I'm new to wine I would like to know is there any particular way I should run the program? where do I need to have it installed?

When I follow the instruction to install wine on intrepid ibex (ubuntu
8.10) from this web page:

when I reload, after key authentication I get this error message:

It mean what it says ;] - you don't have GPG key. That means that wine is
not a trusted package. This is not critical error, you can ignore this. And
how to get around this... well instructions are there - read entire page

now is it a problem with the wine or with the wavepad installation? It seems like a very fundamental problem but I'm afraid I don't understand it.........

It's trying to use a function wine doesn't have implemented. There's a bug:

or try to use the native dll.

Copy the dll from a windows machine, put it in .wine/drive_c/system32,
then run 'winecfg', choose libraries, and set that dll to native.

Well it did, and then after shuting the program (wavepad) and coming back to it a couple of hours later - there is no sound.
I've tried all the sound drivers on winecfg (ALSA, OSS etc.) one by one and none works.
When it was working there was none of the drivers chosen.
Any ideas?

Make sure nothing else using sound. Some programs, like pulseaudio (a sound server) open sound devices in exclusive mode (nothing else can use them at the same time).

How were you checking this?
Use 'lsof /dev/snd/pcm*' to check if anything is using alsa devices.
