WINEDEBUG=-all wine program.exe

Or just ignore it. Wine might (and will) print lots of errors which you should ignore.

What is _the_ problem you are having?

ALSA lib control.c:909:(snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL default:0

That's a warning, not an error. Ignore it unless the application
is misbehaving.

What application are you trying to run? What version of Wine? What
graphics hardware?

I am a complete noob. I am trying to run Rosetta Stone, I am using Mandriva, and KDE with Compiz desktop cube and all the effects. Intel graphics card. I have been reading the WINE documentation, but so far have only been able to find error code.

Which version of Rosetta Stone?
How did you install it?
What's the first problem you run into
(I'm not talking about error messages;
I mean how did the program first misbehave.)

vitamin,
Clearly you are getting frustrated here but I don't think this tone
of voice is the most constructive. Maybe it's time to take a little
break? You can be a big help but there's no reason to get frustrated.
I believe that battlestarjesus is trying to communicate as best he can
but he's new to this and maybe it's not living up to your
requirements.

Just my 2 cents.

Take a deep breath. Get your evening coffee. Remember the magic words.

It is against freenode rules to archive irc logs. Mailing lists and phpbb
posts will be archived, indexed and stored forever. One day you might
regret your tone or somebody might link your nick handle to real name and
your mother or kids will be horrified.

Compiz

Post by battlestarjesus »

I am using Mandriva. Will Compiz with 3d effects offer any potential complications? I am having a rancid difficult getting Miro to work because of it. When I run winecfg it has no title bar and I am awarded with the warning

Code: Select all

libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x64
I have not tryed to Install anything yet. I have been jumping around from trying to get Miro to work, trying to get Virtual box to work, and trying to get WINE to work. I am asking questions on four different forums about five different issues. I just want everything to work. With Miro there is a problem with the X11 interface and the media player (I am not sure which one it uses). When I try and play a video it shuts off. Does WINE have any conflicts with Compiz 3D effects? If so, what are the ways to resolve the conflicts?

I have many more questions, and I am not easily offended.

(Why are you runnng winecfg?)

No title bar sounds bad.
I don't think Compiz interferes, but I don't use it anyway (too annoying).

Sorry for that. Didn't know that absence of the subject is not a problem for the ML.

Actually no title is a known problem with compiz. Don't use compiz. For me it lasted a whopping 15 minutes after I grew tired of all the "cool stuff". And removed it so everything else can run free of compiz bugs.

Because Wine is beta it will print lots of messages that are not always an error. Just a hint for us if you really do have some problems. The real problems constitute:
- absent title bar
- inability to install Y software
- error message shown by program you trying to run

We can't help you if you don't tell us what the problem is.

I turned off the 3D effects. Now when I run winecfg I have a title bar. There should be a way to have the 3d effects on and it not conflict with WINE. I am using WINE version 0.9.44. I have an Intel 939 video card in a Toshiba Satellite U205-S5002 laptop.

I am running winecfg because the documentation indicates that it is a useful configuration feature of WINE, I want to completely understand WINE, and learn to manipulate it in order to port every and any application.

I have a long way to go. WINE seems rather complicated, but I am determined to do everything I can to avoid going back to Microsoft OS unless it either becomes open or radically impresses me. I don't even want to work anywhere that uses Microsoft. Many of my friends still use Microsoft because they are too overwhelmed by Linux. They want to make the switch but it is too time consuming for them. So I am doing it for them, and when I know enough and can ease the transition for them . . . well that is what I am here for, to learn so I can help others.

I have migrated from Ubuntu, to OpenSuse, to Studio64, to Fedora, and now to Mandriva. I still know very little. Until I can convert one of my friends who wants to make the switch I have learned and done nothing. I am in search for a mentor who is willing to guide me through my questions so that I can one day be the mentor for someone else. Where can I find a willing person to do such a thing?

Civility is to do with how you say it, not what you say.

(I'm sure this has been said to you before, by me and others.)

This most likely fixed in newer Wine and/or compiz versions. However don't use those effects, until everything else works for you - test one thing at a time not everything at once.

This is really old version. Wine releases new versions each two weeks. With each version fixing lots of problems, implementing lots of things. Please upgrade (http://winehq.org/site/download) to the latest (wine-0.9.58) version, remove ~/.wine directory before continuing.
Also that video card is not really a best choice for all the 3D stuff. That also might be a reason for incompatibility between Wine and compiz.
battlestarjesus wrote: I am running winecfg because the documentation indicates that it is a useful configuration feature of WINE, I want to completely understand WINE, and learn to manipulate it in order to port every and any application.
Not everything can be done from winecfg. Also in most cases you do not need to change any configuration at all. Of course that doesn't prohibit you from using winecfg.

Understand Wine is a tall order no one yet archived. Even Alexandre does not understand entire Wine :D No offense, but take one problem, one program at a time. Don't try to do everything at once.
battlestarjesus wrote: I have a long way to go. WINE seems rather complicated
Indeed. Not less so as what it tries to implement - windows.

No one will dedicate you their entire life. When you have a problem or a question - ask. This forum is a perfect place for this.

Yay!

Yes; hopefully that will get sorted out as compiz matures.
I am using WINE version 0.9.44.
That's a bit old. We're on 0.9.58 now.

Unless you're a wine developer, a more practical attitude
might be "For each app I need, I'm going to just run the app's
installer with Wine. If the app doesn't install or doesn't work,
I'm going to assume Wine doesn't support the app yet."
Seriously. A lot of people assume that they can use
winecfg etc. to somehow get apps working, but usually,
the answer is simply that Wine doesn't support the app yet.

And if you're a Wine developer, the attitude is roughly
the same, plus "I'm going to file a bug with Wine and
see if I can fix the problem".

I don't think it is against the rules, it's only a recommendation.
