Halo PC update error

Post by starfox5194 »

ok i have been using linux for about three days now and i must say it is pretty cool.

my only problem is that when i tried to update halo pc to play online wine froze. so when i tried to do it manually by clicking on halo update.exe everything seemed to download fine until it started to update.

then it had some weird error about internet explorer.

here is a picture
Image
My specs are

Q6600 2.4 GHz
4 GB of ram
Bad axe 2 Mobo
Nvidia 8800 GTS 512 Mb
Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy

P.S. Man! It took me like a half hour to answer that current maintainer question to register... I think you should change that...

Which version of Wine?
How did you install Halo?
Which version of Halo -- is it "Halo 1: Combat Evolved",
http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?iVersionId=2720 ?

The howto at
http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?iVersionId=2720
says you need mfc42, did you install that?
e.g.
wget http://kegel.com/wine/winetricks
sh winetricks vcrun6
?

Also, it says that wine after 0.9.42 might hang, have you tried 0.9.42?

Don't worry about this, it is a simple way of checking that you are a real man
and not a bot. The last time I applied for appdb, I simply said something
like "I own this app and I would be glad to maintain it". No need to write a
page on why you are the best to do it.

yes i got mfc42.dll

you need that to install halo

i am expirenceing this problem on step 5

is there a way to downgrade wine without reinstalling halo? i thin k this may correct my error

EDIT

ok i am about 100% positive that installing wine 0.9.42 will fix the problem.

but i have some problems.

i found the sources to compile because i cant find a precompiled version for x64 gutsy anywhere. and when i try and compile it, it fails.

what i typed in the terminal

alex@localhost:~$ cd Desktop
alex@localhost:~/Desktop$ cd wine-0.9.42
alex@localhost:~/Desktop/wine-0.9.42$ ./tools/wineinstall
WINE Installer v0.75

Running configure...

configure: creating cache config.cache
checking build system type... x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu
checking host system type... x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu
checking whether make sets $(MAKE)... yes
checking for gcc... gcc -m32
checking for C compiler default output file name...
configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables
See `config.log' for more details.

Configure failed, aborting install.

Please try wine-0.9.42.

I did. You said you were using wine-0.9.58.
I warned you that a warning in the appdb said that wine-0.9.42 was
the last known version to work.

This is getting tiresome. For some reason we're not
communicating. Perhaps it's me, I've got a cold and am
feeling under the weather. I guess I'll sign off this thread.
Good luck with Halo.

You are missing 32-bit development environment. Looks like it would be easer for you to just install 32-bit Wine for your distro. There isn't such thing as 64-bit Wine anyway.

And please DO NOT edit posts. You can't edit them on mailing list.

The path of least resistance is, perhaps, to install a 32 bit linux.

As I've said many times before, I am skeptical about
the usefulness of 64 bit operating systems for the
average user. Stay away from the bleeding edge
unless it buys you something real, is what I say...

Dan:

I agree with your comments about 64 bit OS's at this point. 32 bit OSs
are solid and have been throughly tested.

As to Wine failing to compile, it is a 32 bit application and needs 32
bit libraries.

ok after i run the command

CC="gcc-4.2 -m32" LDFLAGS="-L/lib32 -L/usr/lib32 -L`pwd`/lib32 -Wl,-rpath,/lib32 -Wl,-rpath,/usr/lib32" ./configure

i get the following warnings

configure: WARNING: No OpenGL library found on this system.
Wine will be build without OpenGL or Direct3D support.

configure: WARNING: FreeType development files not found.
Fonts will not be built. Dialog text may be invisible or unaligned.

i believe that they should be fixed before the continuation of compiling.

can anyone tell me what i would need to get from synaptic package manager to fix this?

i got the information from

http://wiki.winehq.org/WineOn64bit#head ... 0a0e8ed64d

thanks a lot.
