then why does windows media player 11 say that the operating system is illegal ???

Why would you want to use WMP when there's plenty of better players for Linux?

Have a look at Totem / SMPlayer / Any of the other 1,000,000,000 other players on Linux :)

This is true if you're just looking to play an mp3, movie, etc. There
are some apps/websites that embed WMP into them in order to run. The
only one I have run across so far is Vongo, but I'm sure there are
others. You can't even get the install to run unless it sees WMP.

DRM does not and will not work on Wine because it verifies internals of OS that Wine can not duplicate. End of the discussion.
