Worked, OS upgrade, died, rebuild, refuses to run

Post by troff »

Hi and apologies all,
(this is going to be a heck of a first post here sorry)

Wine used to work wonderfully; either by command line or by some manager like PlayOnLinux. Ran not only simple software, but contemporary upgraded Windows games like "Lord Of The Rings Online".

Regular system upgrade (and I failed to capture the packages upgraded) and it died. Eventually had to rebuild the OS anyway and now it still refuses to work. Ensuring the graphics card works, new bottle, none of this has worked.

I can use Winetricks to install a component (even if one concerning error pops up), but anything else like even running notepad.exe internally just fails for the same basic reasons - couldn't write pipe, couldn't create window no driver, explorer process failed to start (because of the window I assume)...

Devuan Daedalus with Chimaera, Beowulf, Ascii, Jessie and -security/backports/updates enabled. Debian multimedia repository enabled, but I can't even INSTALL certain pre-requisites without it.

The Debian-packaged version that installed was:

Code: Select all

$ apt policy wine
wine:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 8.0~repack-4
  Version table:
 8.0~repack-4 500
500 http://deb.devuan.org/merged daedalus/main amd64 Packages
500 http://deb.devuan.org/merged daedalus/main i386 Packages
The WineHQ version installed (after purging of the Debian/Devuan version) was:

Code: Select all

$ apt policy wine winehq-stable
winehq-stable:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 9.0.0.0~bullseye-1
  Version table:
 9.0.0.0~bullseye-1 500
500 https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/debian bullseye/main amd64 Packages
Neither Devuan/Debian packaged WINE nor the WineHQ release work. But I'm at a loss. Would dearly appreciate any help that leads to it working again, please.

Been struggling with this for days and every step ends me right back at square 1. Broken it right down to basics and installed the absolute minimum packages. Pre-written bash lines to completely demolish and re-create bottles in a second. Read forum posts, saw advice to go back to earlier versions like 6.12, .14, .16. Tried running it through PlayOnLinux and with both those versions, newest available versions and whatever Proton I could get installed from either the Steam install or with installing Protontricks packages. Lost. Super-lost like I haven't been with a Linux problem in decades. Would really appreciate a hand just to at least advance the situation, please.

Re: Worked, OS upgrade, died, rebuild, refuses to run

Post by jkfloris »

Devuan Daedalus 5.0 is based on Debian Bookworm
Remove the WineHQ Bullseye repository and add the WineHQ Bookworm repo.

If that doesn't solve the problem, try running Wine with:

Code: Select all

VK_ICD_FILENAMES=/usr/share/vulkan/icd.d/nvidia_icd.json WINEPREFIX=~/.wine64 wine winecfg

jkfloris,
the help already deeply appreciated, thank you.

Unfortunately, still failed in what looks like exactly the same way.

Dang, there is now a race between the various features of my life as to which is going to drive me to the end of nuts first.

You can remove the winehq-bullseye.sources file.

Code: Select all

00dc:err:winediag:nodrv_CreateWindow Application tried to create a window, but no driver could be loaded.
Often, this indicates a problem with your video card drivers.
What is the output of:

Code: Select all

glxinfo.i386-linux-gnu -B
# and
glxinfo.x86_64-linux-gnu -B
Jessie and -security/backports/updates enabled.
Do you still have some of the old Jessie packages installed on your system?
What is the output of:

Code: Select all

apt policy
# and
apt list ~o

No obvious such errors.

This is nuts. Don't get me wrong, still super helpful for anything that even potentially leads to a solution. The problem itself is nuts and one of a number of things driving me there.
You can remove the winehq-bullseye.sources file.
True. Commented out because... well, for example, I use pxz for multicore compression. Which for some insane reason only exists in Jessie and ASCII, I understand none of this. So I prefer to comment out historical entries rather than outright deleting them. I mean, I'm still using XMMS. Yes, not 2, XMMS before it bothered with numbers.

I would infer the extension of your advice to delete it anyway, in case it was making a difference. Except...

The output of "glxinfo -B" looks good
I can't see a man explanation or web search of what "~o" means, please pardon my ignorance. What is it?
Which installed packages no longer appear in the configured repositories.

Although it may work, mixing packages from different Debian versions is not recommended.

Do you have the same problem when using Debian's Wine packages?

If that doesn't work, I'll leave it to others to figure out if you're suffering from a bug in Wine or if there's something wrong with your configuration.

Apologies for delay. My main desktop lost an 8tb data drive and... well, rebuilding continues.

Working with two other laptops in its absence have given me a nasty idea I know where the problem is.

Three devices, all running Devuan Daedalus. Two fail, one works.
The ones that fail have packages installed from the Deb Multimedia repository.
The one that seems to work with at least simple things (dead data drive had all my installers on it) is the one that has never touched Deb Multimedia.
Well, the only other difference is the working one is using MBR instead of UEFI.

Yes by the way, the problem existed with Debian native WINE.

So as far as "configuration" goes... deb-multimedia. What packages there are causing problems? Excuse, will go searching here shortly.

But this is nuts. IT USED TO WORK on both the currently don't-work-devices, WITH the deb-multimedia packages. It worked FINE. And then some update and bang, WINE goes to hell. What the?

Alright apparently it's NOT Deb Multimedia, unless I just haven't installed the right package yet.
Testing by trying to WINE the Windows version of Urban Terror.

Have attempted a step-by-step; installing yt-dlp and mplayer; testing UT after each step.
Then, a dist-upgrade with a recorded list of every package Devuan Daedalus was happy to upgrade from DebMultimedia's bookworm. And a reboot.

... and it still runs. As does even plain ordinary notepad.

NOW the only (relevant?) software-difference between three completely different computers; between the ones where WINE fails completely and with WINE running fine... is one was installed with MBR and still works, and the other two with UEFI and both broke.

The broken ones USED TO WORK BEFORE; and then after some default upgrade, broke.

So frankly, I'm even more lost with even fewer hints as to what might have gone wrong yet. I had feared that a failing SATA spindle might've been somehow the cause... but then I got the same broken performance on a netbook with an SSD and an SDcard.

... I have a WINE notepad attempt wrapped in an strace, logged to text. Haven't checked it yet because the big computer it's on died a SATA device on Saturday and the rebuilding is still in progress; also, it's 3312 lines of strace capture. That's going to take a fair amount of focus time to run through, apologies.

If anybody has any quasi-random ideas for anything I could possibly check please...
