Reusing old .wine folder contents

Post by Circlotron2 »

I had stopped allowing updates at version 4 (32 bit) because the program I was using began to give trouble with later wine versions. Before I completely reinstall and update Linux I'm trying out the newest version of it in VirtualBox. To save a lot of messing about. after I installed Wine 9.0 and allowed winecfg to update mono and gecko(?) I simply deleted the existing .wine folder and copied over my old wine 4 folder with all the installed apps. Things seem to work okay, and it still identifies as wine 9.0 And the drop down list shows a choice of Win11 all the way down to Win2.0

Have I committed an unforgivable sin in doing this? Just because it identifies as wine 9.0 would it really be so?

As long as you didn't use winetricks to install DLL files or overwrite DLL files manually (check the Libraries tab in winecfg), you can update your Wine prefix to the latest version this way.

Wine will automatically install the new files (update the prefix) when you run a program with Wine.
