WINE 8.0 broke NSOED. This application had run flawlessly in WINE since whatever version was concurrent with Ubuntu Dapper Drake (late 2006)--fifteen or sixteen years of flawless performance.

With a large degree realistic pragmatism on my part, I realise that a broken 16 Bit application (DOS/Win 3.11/Win 95/NT 3.51) one probably with very few users, is of low/no priority for bug fixes and that the priority is reduced even further by the fact that there is an effective, if mildly cumbersome, workaround.
No complaints here. I am just pointing out that NSOED is still broken in 9.0.
