EVE Online "CPU Leak"

Post by tonytonyistony »

Since the latest patch of EVE Online I've noticed that when jumping through gates and docking in stations, something happens within the wine environment that doesn't release CPU load and could be described as a CPU leak. I currently run 6 clients of EVE simultaneously and have done so for the past year. Last night I spent some time testing and trying to find logs that might isolate the issue, but Im coming up empty handed.

My Specs.
EndevourOS build 2023.03.26
Xfce build 4.18

Tested wine environments that all behave the same.
Steam Proton 8.0-3 & Experimental
Lutris 0.5.13 running wine-8.13

CPU
Intel Core i7-6850K @ 3.6GHz

GPU
Nvidia 1080

Memory
32gb G.Skill Trident Z RGB Series

HD running Steam, Lutris and Wine
Samsung_SSD_960_PRO (nvme)

Symptoms
I will login 6 client of EVE and have a base line CPU usage of around 10-20%. I will undock those 6 characters and jump them through a star gate to change solar systems. After doing so my CPU will increase to 80-90% and will remain in this state. If I jump through another gate the load with cap my CPU at 100%. This load will remain until I completely log out all the clients. I have also seen that if I look at the task manager and see specific client using more memory and I log it out, the CPU load will move to another client.

Additional symptoms, with 6 clients, if I dock them in a station it will increase my CPU load by 20% per dock. If I continue to do this in succession, it will bring my CPU load to 100% and I will need to logout my clients completely to release the CPU load.

These issues didnt arise until CCP released their latest expansion name Viridian which had some graphical overhauls. During testing and having my EVE clients on minimal graphical settings (potato mode), my GPU would remain at 20% usage under normal load.

Potential log info
The only logs Ive been able to find are from Lutris

***UPDATE***

I believe Ive discovered something that has removed the issue. I decided to restore my client settings to default fresh install. I logged all the toons in and flew around with them and Im stable around 30-50% CPU usage.

On my custom client settings Ive moved windows around and shrunk things to make 8 toons fit on 3 monitors. I also was using SharaSawa overview pack on all 8 toons. There is something in my custom client setup that is bricking my CPU.

Im going to load it back up and see if I can isolate the configuration.

I have concluded testing. Im confident that this issue is related to launcher client profiles that I had created prior to the lastest patch. If I loaded any of my old profiles the computer would behave terribly. If I used the build it default profile all my issues go away. I hope this helps someone, this topic can be closed.

Wanted to check back in and let the forum know this issue persists. Its related to jumping through gates and docking in stations when the cutscene happens. CPU never releases the more times I do it and it requires shutdown the game to release the CPU load.
