Isn't it easier to install a lightweight up-to-date Linux version and install the Linux version of HLDS?

thanx jkfloris - I got stuck today trying to install a lightweight up-to-date distro. I searched for some and found antix and q4os. antiX-21_386-core hung during installation and q4os-4.10-i386 installed but wudnt boot after installation. i cudnt find any other distros that are up to date and can run with less than 384 ram. can u suggest a distro for HLDS? thank u

You could also try Damn Small Linux:

http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/

I have not tried it myself. I have some 8 years notebook which has Sparky Linux Xfce now (its also being called lightweight distribution) and I was satisfied with it for quite some time. But lately it became really sluggish, so what I want to try is q4os first and then Damn Small Linux if q4os will not meet my needs.

hi again jkfloris.

on the https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/HLDSUpdateTool page it says:

HLDSUpdateTool was deprecated in early 2013 in favor of SteamCMD.
The Content Delivery Network HLDSUpdateTool used was shut down in late 2013, thus HLDSUpdateTool is no longer functional.

but on the https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wik ... ted_Server page it says:

See SteamCMD for most games. See HLDSUpdateTool for games that haven't been updated in a long time.

do I hav to use SteamCMD?

I think you have to use SteamCMD.
I also found some more information here:
https://github.com/dgibbs64/HLDS-appmanifest

If the server is only used on a LAN, you also can download an older version here:
https://files.steamlessproject.nl/category.php?id=16

Unfortunately, the question is no longer about Wine, so I'm afraid I can't help you any further.

Have you tested Lubuntu 18.04.5 32 bits ? OS use less of 200 MB RAM and you can enable zram.
