after i installed kubuntu 8.04 with kde4 on my pc (which already has a XP install on a different disk) i went on to configure wine with wineconf.
i think i made the mistake of pointing the c: drive for wine to the real c: with the xp installation in it.
point is, now xp is screwed. it boots, loads until getting a totally black screen with the pointer instead of the desktop... even in recovery mode.
browsing in the windows directory i found a recent ntbtlog.txt that has countless "cant load driver XXXX"...

Well, you've just done what the Wine FAQ specifically says not to do. You should restore your windows system from your latest backup.

The best advice I can give you is reinstall windows and never try this
again. Your .dlls in the real windows system folder were replaced by
fake wine .dlls. You could try to use rsync to grab these dlls from an
identical XP system if you have one though.

yeah i reckon that was a pretty stupid move
i'll have to reinstall xp on it's disk then... i use it only for gaming so system restore and all the useless services were off but i lost nothing important...
all in all i guess documentation is there for a reason
