Installing Viber
Installing Viber
I am not very technical and new to Linux and Wine.
I am using an old 386 Lenova Laptop.
I installed Wine just fine. I did not make any adjustments to disk drives such as fake drives etc. as all I wanted was to use Wine for was to run Viber.
In terminal I used ......Sudo wine ViberSetup.exe to install Viber.
It installed and I was able to run viber and send messagee and end Viber.
The problem is when I open Wine again there is NO viber program to run.
So I went back to terminal and redid Sudo wine ViberSetup.exe
The installer must have found Viber was installed as it asks me if I want to repair it or Uninstall it.
So I select the repair and open wine and magically Viber starts up without me trying to find it in Wine or run it.
However Wine never shows a Viber program available to run the next time I open wine. So I have to go back into terminal and repeat the Viber setup process again.
Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? The vibersetup.exe file is in my Home Downloads folder.

Re: Installing Viber
Using MX Linux and the only 386 version it has which id Xfc. I will look into your reading suggestions for further help.
The other question I asked which I was hoping someone would help with is .....it appears that Viber did get installed as every time I rerun setup it asks me if I want to uninstall it or repair it. However in searching with Linux file manager even with hidden file option turn on I can't find any Viber files. So when I ran Sudo wine ViberSetup.exe where did Wine put the .exe or .msi file? Wine seems to know it exists as after I run the command and open Wine Viber starts up with all of the settings I set from a previous running. So somewhere there are files for Viber and as a Windows user I am perplexed as to why I can't find them in Linux file system.

I tend to just run Wine using a terminal Window. However I do have a Github repository to provide Wine Desktop Integration for my Gentoo bobwya Overlay. This repository should support Debian as well...

Re: Installing Viber
Update:
I read the links and they are good advice but do not work for installing Viber with Wine on a 386 computer.
The internet is a source for the issue I am having of trying to install Viber with Wine and getting the following: Setup Failed. Access denied 0X80070005.
The only way to get around this is to use: sudo wine ViberSetup.exe. At which point you are asked for your PW and once you supply it the install works. Viber starts and runs.
However I can never find the Viber executable to run it again. All of my settings in Viber are saved. Using Q4Wine or terminal does not work as I can’t find or see the Viber program to execute.
The only way I can run Viber is to: sudo wine ViberSetup.exe. I provide my PW and answer the question on the screen as to do a repair or uninstall. I answer repair and wait a few minutes and Viber starts with all of my saved settings.

Re: Installing Viber
I've tried the Windows XP version of Viber with Wine 6.0-rc4
Do the following commands work?
Do the following commands work?
Code: Select all
# --- Install Viber ---
# cd to the directory where you have downloaded 'ViberSetup.exe'
WINEPREFIX=~/ViberOnWine wine ViberSetup.exe
# Close Viber
# --- Run Viber ---
cd $HOME/ViberOnWine/drive_c/users/$USER/Local\ Settings/Application\ Data/Viber

Re: Installing Viber
jfkloris,
Do I need to uninstall it before I run these commands?
Do I need to uninstall it before I run these commands?
Re: Installing Viber
jkfloris'
I tried the new commands you gave me to install viber. The commands themselves worked but I still encountered the Setup Failed. Access denied 0X80070005.error. So back to square one.
I can still run with sudo wine ViberSetup.exe and get the option to repair or uninstall and choosing to repair Viber will then open and run.
Not sure where to go from here. If you have any more suggestions I would be happy to try them.

Did you try the Windows XP version of Viber?
Can you post a terminal output?
Probably you can find your Viber installation in:I can still run with sudo wine ViberSetup.exe and get the option to repair or uninstall and choosing to repair Viber will then open and run.

Re: Installing Viber
Also following your instructions after signing in as root (as I could not access root otherwise) I found the Viber.exe.
So it appears that wine ViberSetup.exe is putting the Viber.exe file in a folder that I can't access unless I sign in as root? That does not make sense. This is why Q4Wine can't access it. Also why in terminal the command wine ViberSetup.exe fails with access denied?
So is there a workaround other that me signing in as root?

Re: Installing Viber
Also while signed in as root I checked the list of apps and now I see Viber and I can run it from the app list! Wow! That's progress and what I want but not signed in as root. I believe that is not a good thing for security reasons...right?
Re: Installing Viber
It's obvious that Viber is installed in the /root directory if you use sudo.
Did you read:

Update Wine to a more recent version and try again.Wine32 4.0-2
Re: Installing Viber
Yes but I tried to initially install it using Q4wine and received the access failed msg so I then tried terminal and got the same thing and finally tried sudo. If my memory is correct this was the chain of events.
So how do I remedy this? Can I just move the files out of root? Should I while logged in as root uninstall viber and wine?

Re: Installing Viber
The thing is when I am not signed in as root and in terminal do: wine ViberSetup.exe I get the access denied message. So something else is at play here impacting the process that is requiring root access.
Re: Installing Viber
Please try to update your Wine installation first so we can make sure we are not finding an old bug and rename or delete your ~/.wine folder.
Re: Installing Viber
Thanks jkfloris for the continued hand holding and help.
Re: rename or delete ~/.wine
Where is the ~/.wine folder that I should be renaming? In home/len I have a .wine folder is that the one?
How do I update the wine installation after I do this? With synaptic package manager? With Terminal and if with terminal what command?

Yes, that's the right directory. ~ is an abbreviation of /home/usernameIn home/len I have a .wine folder is that the one?
MX Linux is based on Debian stable, so you can use this manual.
Don't forget to install the libfaudio0 package from https://download.opensuse.org/repositor ... r_i386.deb
Re: Installing Viber
I am not authorized to do this as I am stopped at this point. So the instructions are missing something at this point:
dd the repository to /etc/apt/sources.list or create a *.list under /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ with the following content:
For this version: Add this content to /etc/apt/sources.list:
Debian 10 (Buster) deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/debian/ buster main
Debian Testing (currently Bullseye) deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/debian/ bullseye main
So I need more advice on how to add.

Re: Installing Viber
There are 4 folders under /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ and the instructions don't tell me where to put: deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/debian/
and as I said in the previous post if I try to put it in a file I get stopped. I first tried to put it in debian.list
the 4 ffiles that are in this folder are: debian.list, debian-stable-updates.list. mx.list, various.list

Re: Installing Viber
The next command should work:
Code: Select all
echo "deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/debian/ buster main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/winehq.list
