Hi there all of you Linux gurus,
I have spend a considerable time trying to install and use Wine with nothing but headache.
I stubbornly do not want to move from Mint 17.3 (Rosa), the last KDE distro where I'm able to set my workplaces the way I want them and with 'all bells and whistles' including window animations and backgrounds. I was cleaning up some CDs and floppies???!!!,( remember those) left over from XP days and wanted to open some files I've made over the years.
"Wine is the solution", somebody yelled. Not to be though. it seems, Wine has moved on and left those like myself behind. there are couple of PPA repos, however, have tried them, get to finish install, but configuration fails or, can not add ANY windows app at all.
I would appreciate any help from anybody even if you have to tell me to move on onto the latest Mint distro.
Cheers from down Under

Support for Linux Mint 17.3 ended in April 2019, so no new packages are being built.
The latest versions on https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/dists/trusty are:
- Wine stable 4.0
- Wine devel 4.7
- Wine staging 4.7
Maybe you are lucky and your programs will work with one of these versions.
But keep in mind you don't get any (security) updates; you are on your own.
