What is the compatibility status of Windows itself?

Post by Livy »

Wine allows user to choose the version of Windows on which their software will run. Assume that I chose Windows 7 environment, insert/mount Windows 10 DVD, then run setup.exe. Will I get Windows 10 after the installation completed?

The Windows installer would not complete; Wine is not a VM. https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16522

Lol I know it would stop and throw an error at some point. This question was for fun, because I couldn't get the logic behind that.

Well, if it theoretically managed to complete, winecfg would not work at all because the installer would have replaced Wine's plain text registry with Windows' binary file, which Wine cannot read, and even if it could, the registry would be missing all the Wine-specific registry entries.
