Windows 7 is the current default and has been since Wine 2.2. If your wineprefix was created in an older version of Wine, you can simply change the Windows version in winecfg. If you do not see any Windows versions higher than XP in winecfg then either you are running a very old version of Wine or a modified version that is not supported here.

Please title forum threads sensibly...
E.g.
Wine 3.13: Turbotax won't install
People are far more likely to help you, if you make an effort in return!

You also haven't stated what version of Turbotax you are trying to install...
However, referring to WineHQ AppDB: Turbotax / 2016, recent versions of Turbotax appear to require a native dotnet installation to work (plus some other Workarounds).

Bob,

My problem is not that TT won't install. The problem is Win7 is not available in the drop down box in winecfg.
The latest version is WinXP.
I successfully installed TT 2007 under WinXP but TT 2017 requires Win 7. The default version of Wine from the LM 18.3 app installer supports only XP and older. How can I make sure I have Wine V3, which, according to dimesio, should support Win 7?

Thanks

dimesio,

Thanks for your reply. I selected Wine from the app installer built into LM 18.3 - Mate.
It installed Wine (on a P4).
Based on your comment, I am not sure which version of Wine I installed.
How can I verify?

Use the WineHQ packages. https://wiki.winehq.org/Ubuntu

@mlee952

You can check this with:

Code: Select all

wine --version
This will ensure you are testing the Wine version in your user's PATH.

Thanks Bob,

I have definitely installed wine 3.0.2 now using the commands on wineHq.
It also installed .net, wine-mono, and wine-gecko with msi-exec errors.
I ran winecfg and selected win 7.

I tried to install TT from thumbdrive by using add and selecting setup.exe; nothing seemed to happen.
I then installed playonlinux and told it I was using 3.0.2.
Playonlinux also installed mono and gecko.
I started the setup.exe and it tried to install TT, at 3%, TT tried to install .net and eventually aborted.

Not sure what to do next.

@mlee952

What version of Turbo Tax you are trying to install?

You'll have to troubleshoot issues with Wine using a terminal.
See: WineHQ User's Guide: 3 Using Wine.

You'll probably want to start by getting the latest Wine Development release (3.13) and the latest Winetricks Git Master...
See: WineHQ Download: Ubuntu.
See: WineHQ Wiki: Winetricks.

Then you'll want to set up a clean 32-bit WINEPREFIX...
See: WineHQ FAQ: 6.5.3 How do I create a 32 bit wineprefix on a 64 bit system?

Wine Stable is really just for the situation when you have an application already working under Wine,
and you don't want Wine updates to have potential regressions...

Please note that: Play On Linux is not supported here.
Also, as it is not currently being maintained (version 4.x), it won't be of much use to you anyway...
