Can Wine currently be built for Windows in order to run programs only compatible with older versions of Windows?
One example is an old game that will run on Windows XP but not with newer versions, even using Windows' compatibility options. However a Mac user has recently claimed to have the program run fine using Wine.

@ eatingAlso see: Wine on Windows. The fact that this Wiki page has been archived should probably not inspire much hope! Bob

That said, you can run wine3d on windows - for example if an old DirectX game gives you only a blackscreen, you can use that to try and fix it.

You could install a Linux distribution in the "Windows Subsystem for Linux" (WSL) in Windows 10. Install an X server for Windows in Windows 10. Install Wine in WSL and try to run your application. But I don't think you will get a decent performance.

Out of curiosity I tried the Wine in WSL option and it seems to work. Quote: One example is an old game that will run on Windows XP but not with newer versions Can you give an example?

The Windows Subsystem for Linux only supports 64-bit applications. In other words, only wine64 will run and your old 32-bit Windows XP games wouldn't.

Boxedwine is moving along slowly. I have some games working with a x32 to x64 binary translator (this should be in the next release, who know when). I ended up getting about 40% the speed in Quake 2 with OpenGL when compare to it running natively on the same box. So not quite true Wine of Windows because of the performance hit, but it is getting closer.
