Qadv.exe crashes: Run-time error '380': Invalid property val

Post by ottavio »

Hi all,

my first post here and I hope I'm executing the right sequence.

I am running LMDE2 (64 bit) and I'm trying to run a program called QADV. This is an unmaintained program for UK Radio Amateurs who are studying for the Full Licence. I know this program is not in the database, so I'm not expecting anything good but I have nothing to lose. I've tried to contact the owner of the program but the email bounced back. I got the program from here:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1HVcyL ... 5DWh9KqA-3

So I have installed wine:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install wine/jessie-backports wine32/jessie-backports wine64/jessie-backports libwine/jessie-backports libwine:i386/jessie-backports fonts-wine/jessie-backports

Code: Select all

winecfg
And I have selected Windows 10, because it runs fine in W10.

As the zip doesn't come with an installer, I have extracted the directory QADV into: /home/oc/Documents/LICENCE/ADVANCED/QADV/QADV-17.3.7/QADV

Code: Select all

ls -al .wine/drive_c/users/oc/QADV/

I have enabled support to directly launch Windows executables from the command line:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install wine-binfmt
  sudo update-binfmts --import wine
Then I launched the program directly from the command line:

Code: Select all

.wine/drive_c/users/oc/QADV/QADV.exe
As you can see the programs starts fine:

But when I select "First Question", the programs crashes with "Run-time error '380': Invalid property value"

I've also tried earlier version of the program, but to no avail.

Calling the program with "wine" also produces the same error.

Any help will be appreciated.

I downloaded the zip file and copied the extracted QADV directory to the Program Files directory of a 32 bit wineprefix. It runs fine here out of the box in Wine 3.8 with the Windows version left at the default of Windows 7.

You didn't mention what Wine version you're using, but since you're using the Debian distro package, it's probably outdated. Plus, the Debian distro packages make unsupported modifications to Wine. So the first thing I suggest is uninstalling the distro package and trying the WineHQ one. https://wiki.winehq.org/Debian

Then try a clean 32 bit wineprefix, and leave the Windows version alone. If you still have problems, post terminal output.

Thanks @dimesop, I'll tray that later on.

IN the meantine I copy the error output from the command line, in case this gives any clue:

Code: Select all

$ wine32 start .wine/drive_c/QADV/QADV.exe
That's not correct. If you're using unix-style paths, it should be wine start /unix /path/to/executable. https://wiki.winehq.org/Wine_User%27s_G ... mmand_line

Normally I'd say the fixme messages in your console output are harmless, but I don't get them when I run the app. It could be something that has been implemented since the 4 year old version you're running.

Dimesio, I've followed you advice, but I'm still back to square one, and the log output seems the same as post above.

This is what I did:

Code: Select all

oc@e130 $ wine --version
wine-3.0
I'm using the development release, 3.8. .

Code: Select all

0010:err:winediag:SECUR32_initNTLMSP ntlm_auth was not found or is outdated. Make sure that ntlm_auth >= 3.0.25 is in your path. Usually, you can find it in the winbind package of your distribution.
I don't know if that's the cause of this particular problem, but you do need to fix it, as it can prevent programs from working.

I'm at loss. Does your installation not crash when selecting the first question?

Would you suggest trying the development version?

Re: Qadv.exe crashes: Run-time error '380': Invalid property

Post by dimesio »

The program does not crash on my system at any point. I do not get the fixme:olepicture:OLEPictureImpl_FindConnectionPoint messages in the terminal. Actually, there is no terminal output from this program on my system.

One thing I noticed that I have to ask about is the path you used:

Code: Select all

/home/oc/WINE32/drive_c/QADV/qfull-17.4.2/QADV.exe
When I unzipped the contents of the file I downloaded from the link you provided, it extracted everything into one QADV folder; there was no qfull-17.4.2 subfolder. Checking the version number displayed in the program itself, it says 17.3.7. It looks like you are running a different version of the program than what I've been testing, and that alone could be the reason why I can't reproduce the crash.

Hi, I'm testing different versions of the same program, and this time I was testing a newer version.

Sorry for being pedantic. Can you just reproduce the entire sequence that you used?

So you downloaded the zip file.

How did you extract it? Using wine or just your distribution's unzipper? I'd like to try a different sequence in case I missed a step somewhere.

Is there a chance that there is something here on my LMDE installation that conflicts with wine? The underlying distribution is Debian Jessie, which is quite old. What system are you using, if I may ask?

SOLVED (?) Run-time error '380': Invalid property

Post by ottavio »

SOLVED!

At least temporarily.

I've tried a few random solutions from past threads on this forum.

- Created a new WINE64 prefix (yes, I know!)
- winecfg set environmnent to WIndows 10
- copied all fonts from my existing W10 partition to drive_c/windows/Fonts/

Restarted the program, played around with it a lot, and, fingers crossed, no crashes, despite some random errors in the bash terminal.

But... shouldn't wine come with a basic set of fonts? I did follow the installation instructions religiously!

Wine does come with a basic set of fonts, but some apps won't work without the MS corefonts. I have them installed systemwide, so that's why I couldn't reproduce the problem.

Anyway, I'm happy that it does work some way.

My windows/Fonts directory was empty.

How do you install fonts systemwide? WIth winetricks?

You install them systemwide through your distro. The fonts are freely available on Sourceforge, and many distros have packages that will fetch and install them for you. On openSUSE the package is fetchmsttfonts; other distros may give it other names.

Winetricks will only install the corefonts to a specific wineprefix; if you have more than one wineprefix, you will have to install the fonts to each one.
