Wine... on Windows 10?

Post by Lycanphoenix »

ADISCLAI.MER: I apologize if this thread is in the wrong section. I am new here, and I didn't see a section on the forums for general discussion.

Wine, our beloved Windows compatibility layer, produced through reverse engineering of older operating systems... Could actually, theoretically, run on top of Windows 10 now; Microsoft has actually updated the OS to allow you to install Ubuntu and Bash as a shell, meaning that those of us who run Windows on a regular basis could actually play our old 16-bit Win95 games on a 64-bit Windows 10 machine, without any software emulation.

I joined this forum only a day or two ago, because I had plans to gradually migrate over to Linux... And I had wondered why my dad loved Windows 10 so much that he would threaten to force me to "upgrade" from Windows 7. I guess he could sense changes on the horizon or something along those lines.

TL-DR: Microsoft has just made an anti-Wine. What do you guys think of this?
P.S.: Yes, I wrote "A Disclaimer" as an 8.3 filename.

The articles you link to only mention command line tools. Wine's console mode can't do very much. https://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#Can_Wine_ru ... er_mode.3F

In word... No!!

Wine 16-bit relies on Linux kernel mode hooks to work. There was an out cry when Linus tried to remove this facility - kernel version 3.xx (just Google for it - if you are interested). I guess regular 32-bit Wine might work... I know folk are working on getting a full X stack working... But definitely not for quite sometime. It's probably of no interest to MS either...
