Trying to run (very) old programs

Post by mynameisntkevin »

So I downloaded a bunch of abandonware from back when I was a wee lad and am trying to install these games. I have Wine and I have tried to open them with it. The thing is, it just gives me a processing mouse icon and then that disappears. I am not getting any error messages or anything. I don't really know what to do to fix this. Any help would be appreciated.

Post terminal output. http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#get_log

You didn't mention what Wine version you're using. If it's older than 1.8, upgrade.

So Wine is version 1.6.2 and it doesn't appear that a newer version is available through the software management service. The first problem was that I didn't have DOSBox. I thought it was integrated into wine. Now the issue is with MIDI. I downloaded Timidity ++. Will update when I get back into it.

What distro are you on? If it's one of the ones WineHQ builds packages for, use those. viewtopic.php?f=8&t=25767

Regarding DOSBox, make sure you have a recent SVN version if you are running apps that need both Wine and DOSBox. Their latest stable release has bugs affecting Wine that have been fixed in SVN. https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18118
