Looming 64-bit Apocalypse

Apple has started the process of phasing out 32-bit applications. Eventually, probably in MacOS 10.14, only 64-bit applications will be supported. That means that we won't be able to run any of the many 32-bit programs anymore. Is it as apocalyptic as it looks like? Or are there plans drawn to avoid that?
