Problems with xQuartz

I have XQuartz 2.7.9 installed, but I keep getting the following error when installing from pkg: "Failure: You need to install XQuartz 2.7.7 or higher first." I've restarted my mac (2012 macbook pro, running el capitan) after the install and I've run XQuartz to ensure it's properly installed. Any help / links?
