"You are running wineinstall as root, this is not advisable"

Post by thatawesomedude »

So I'm trying to install the 1.5.14 development build on my mac (10.7.5). The README says:
From the top-level directory
of the Wine source (which contains this file), run:

./tools/wineinstall

so I go to ~/Downloads/wine-1.5.14/ and to run wineinstall as directed, but whe I do, I get the error
Wine Installer v1.0

You are running wineinstall as root, this is not advisable. Please rerun as a user.
Aborting.

I understand the binary isn't designed for macs, and therefore I may need to install some extra stuff? However, the windows program I want to run only works on this version of wine (or so all my research has told me).

Can anyone help me out with this issue?

There are a few possibilites to install wine on Mac, the 'official' way would be via MacPorts, google for MacPorts+wine, a tutorial for that can be found in http://www.davidbaumgold.com/tutorials/wine-mac/ . Alternatively you could use Wineskin or PlayOnMac, but these aren't supported by the wine forum, that means, if you are running into issues, you'll have to report them to the Playonmac or Wineskin people, see sticking post above.
