I followed the instructions here (https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=19444) to install Steam and haven't had any issues getting it to run. (When I first launch I get an error message that says steamwebhelper.exe has encountered a serious error, but the rest of the app itself seems to work fine -- that is, I can access Store, Library, Communities, etc).

However, when I try to launch the new Life Is Strange: Before the Storm game, it appears to launch and says "Running" in Steam, but never actually launches on my computer. It's like the window is hidden somewhere I can't access. I have adjusted most of the graphics settings in winecfg (all window settings are currently enabled, but I experienced the same behavior with only "Allow the window manager to control the windows" checked) to no effect.

I am running Wine Staging 2.16. Here is a readout of the Terminal log from roughly the point where I launched Life Is Strange (condensed for easier reading) [NOTE: I tried to add the full file as an attachment, but neither .rtf nor .txt were allowed as attachment types...]

Code:

MacBook-2:Steam michael$ wine Steam.exe -no-cef-sandbox

It seems that a windows-thread (probably the game itself) has a stack overflow directly after the game starts. So it might help to know some details about the hardware (processor speed and type, ram size) and about the software (OS X Version, emulated windows-version). And it might help to know, if things like the steam-overlay are enabled.

And one last question. Did you tried that in a clean prefix? If not use a clean prefix (and be sure that it's a 64bit prefix, according to the log it seems that you are using a 32bit prefix, which is not supported for LiS:BtS) and probably start the game directly from the command line ("-applaunch 554620" in case of LiS: BtS).

Sure thing -- here the tech specs:
Macbook Pro 2016
Processor: 3.3 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory: 16 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3
Graphics: Intel Iris Graphics 550 1536 MB
Software: OS 10.12.4
Wine is currently emulating Windows 7, but I can change that in winecfg if need be.

I used a clean 64 bit prefix to install Steam, which is what this is running on. I just tried launching from the command line, but while Steam went through its normal launch process, none of its windows are visible now. There's a Steam icon in my dock (called wine preloader) but when I click it there are no available windows.

If you start a game via -applaunch there won't be any steam-windows except from 2 windows that might show up for some seconds (something like "Verifying Login Data" and "Starting Life is Strange: Before the Strom"), because steam will only perform the steps that are necessary to start the game (which also results in less messages in the terminal log).

Oh, I think I found the problem: the game uses Denuvo Anti-Tamper a 3rd-party DRM protection, which often causes problems in wine (which are quite impossible to solve, because Denuvo doesn't share any information about how the protection works and it's very hard to find out because of encryption and a lot of intentionally broken code where the protection will send you if it detects anything that might be a debugger or a manipulated OS.) But according to the Denuvo article in the english wikipedia there is also a cracked version, which bypasses the Denuvo Anti-Tamper somehow.

Got it, thanks! I'll try to figure those out. I'm still thinking there must be a way to launch on Wine though -- this page seems to indicate it's undergone *some* level of testing on Wine: https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager. ... &iId=35717

So I thought i'd dig into why the Steamwebhelper.exe was crashing, in case that had something to do with why the game wasn't working, and I saw some people indicating they needed to reinstall Visual C++ 2017 redistributables (http://steamcommunity.com/discussions/f ... 5074522537).

I went to do so using winetricks and got the following error:

MacBook-2:~ michael$ WINEPREFIX=~/.wine-new winetricks vcrun2017
------------------------------------------------------
wine cmd.exe /c echo '%ProgramFiles%' returned empty string, error message "wine: '/Users/michael/.wine-new' is a 64-bit installation, it cannot be used with a 32-bit wineserver."
---------------------

I'm not sure how to interpret that. I had created a new clean 64 bit wine prefix, and by using the WINEPREFIX I assumed I was operating within that prefix. I'm not sure why it thinks I'm on a 32-bit wineserver or how to change that to 64 bit.

Yea, but this test for LiS: BtS was on linux, and because there are some differences between mac and linux, this entry doesn't give a guaranty, that it will work on mac too (especially with this drm-protection). And I also experienced this difference between mac and linux as I tried to play LiS via wine (because I only have 10.10.5 and not 10.11). The tests say, that everything works fine, but for me it doesn't because i get graphical glitches (see this bug-report).

Yea, you are using a 64-bit prefix (and winetricks tries to use this prefix), but it seams that winetricks on mac uses 32bit wine by default. But as far as i can see it form the winetricks man-page, you can set the wine binary and the wineserver winetricks should use by using the environment-variables WINE and WINESERVER. As far as I see, it should be enough to set WINE to the bin-folder of your current wine-installation (e.g. /Applications/Wine Devel.app/Contents/Resources/wine/bin, if you are using the devel-version), because the wineserver should be in the same directory. This forces winetricks to use this installation and not the default one in usr/bin (or usr/local/Cellar/wine/<version>/bin, if you installed winetricks via homebrew).
The wineserver is the core part of wine, which runs all the applications and translates between windows and the os wine is running on (see the wiki-page about the wineserver).

I'm game to try! I'm just not sure how to do this. I've kind of been learning on the fly about all things wine-related.

Just as you can set the environment-variable WINEPREFIX to tell wine/winetricks which prefix to use, you can set an environment-variable called WINE to tell winetricks which wine-installation to use. So the path depends on the way you installed wine and which wine (devel, stable, staging) you have installed. If you installed wine via the installer it should be installed in the Applications-folder, so if you want to have the path to the binaries, just go to the Applications-folder, click on the installation, select "Show package contents" and navigate to Contents/Resources/wine/bin, or just copy the path that is shown at the beginning of the terminal window, that opens you double-click the program.

Okay. I think you missunderstood my post a little bit (probably my post was a little bit chaotic). So you have to use WINE and WINEPREFIX together in the command you use to launch winetricks, because (as far as I know) Terminal normally doesn't remember these variables.
The path for WINE depends on how you installed wine and which type (stable, level, staging) you installed, so to prevent future chaos just write where/how you installed wine, and I will explain what you have to write into the WINE environment variable.
And one last thing: If a path starts with '/' it's an absolute path beginning at the root of your "Macintosh HD"-drive. If you want to go to a subdirectory of your current directory the path should not begin with '/' as long it's not an absolute path.

Got it -- I installed both Staging and Devel, but I've been using Devel for all Steam/BTS-related testing. I have the Wine-Devel app located in my global Applications folder, which is in the root directory (Macintosh HD). The wineprefix (which is not the original 32 bix prefix I installed, simply called .wine) is in my User folder /Users/michael/.wine-new

Okay. So the command to use should be:
Code:
WINE=/Applications/Wine\ Devel.app/Contents/Resources/wine/bin WINEPREFIX=/Users/michael/.wine-new winetricks vcrun2017

I didn't test it, but it should work.

Tried a few things, but so far no luck. (See output below). I googled around a lot for this, but it seems like everyone else who had this problem had the opposite situation. They had a default wine prefix that was 64 bit and were trying to install into a 32 bit prefix. My default was a 32 bit, and my new one is 64.
https://github.com/Winetricks/winetricks/issues/163
https://code.google.com/archive/p/winet ... ues/189#c8

I also updated winetricks to the newest version but that doesn't seem to have done anything. I checked my wine version, and it indicates 2.16.

Code:
MacBook-2:~ michael$ WINE=/Applications/Wine\ Devel.app/Contents/Resources/wine/bin WINEPREFIX=/Users/michael/.wine-new winetricks vcrun2017
usage: dirname path
------------------------------------------------------
WINE is /Applications/Wine Devel.app/Contents/Resources/wine/bin, which is neither on the path nor an executable file
------------------------------------------------------
MacBook-2:~ michael$ WINE=/Applications/Wine\ Devel.app/Contents/Resources/wine/bin/wineserver WINEARCH=win64 WINEPREFIX=/Users/michael/.wine-new winetricks vcrun2017
usage: dirname path
------------------------------------------------------
/Applications/Wine Devel.app/Contents/Resources/wine/bin/wineserver cmd.exe /c echo '%ProgramFiles%' returned empty string, error message ""
------------------------------------------------------
MacBook-2:~ michael$ WINE=/Applications/Wine\ Devel.app/Contents/Resources/wine/bin/wine WINEARCH=win64 WINEPREFIX=/Users/michael/.wine-new winetricks vcrun2017
usage: dirname path

------------------------------------------------------
/Applications/Wine Devel.app/Contents/Resources/wine/bin/wine cmd.exe /c echo '%ProgramFiles%' returned empty string, error message "wine: '/Users/michael/.wine-new' is a 64-bit installation, it cannot be used with a 32-bit wineserver."

That's strange. It seams that the path to the directory where wine is located is not enough (so my last post was a little bit wrong, but I just tested
Code:
WINE=/Applications/Wine\ Devel.app/Contents/Resources/wine/bin/wine WINEARCH=win64 WINEPREFIX=~/.wine winetricks
and
Code:
WINE=/Applications/Wine\ Devel.app/Contents/Resources/wine/bin/wine WINEPREFIX=~/.wine winetricks
with winetricks 20170207 on my 64bit default wine prefix and winetricks recognized the prefix correctly as 64bit and started the gui without any problems. But I use OS X 10.10.5 and I didn't tried installing a dll, so that might be the difference that causes the problem.
And it seams that WINEARCH=win64 doesn't make any differences, because as far as I see, this option is not recognized by winetricks.
And if the gui opens, don't wonder when the window is empty except form 2 buttons (okay and cancel). Just hit cancel and select the action you want to do.
