Hello,
in a silent minute I had the idea to check if Wine can be used to play Starforce protected games,
in this case Trackmania Sunrise Extreme.
The idea appeared, because I had read that some small steps had been made to be able to
get EAC and other protection kits running in Wine.
After a search I found this Bugzilla ticket: https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=44925
The comments for me indicated, that it should be possible to run Trackmania Sunrise Extreme now
with Wine.
I installed it with Wine 5.2, 6.1 and 6.9, the game got installed and could start the launcher, but after
that Starforce blocks the execution.
After clicking "Start" in the launcher, the first window from Starforce appears and wants to install
Starforce. After accepting the installation, the second window tells to restart the system.
With or without restart the game won't start.
Do I understand the mentioned Bugzilla ticket wrong and Starforce doesn't work with Wine?
Or does every game need a different approach, because Starforce works from game to game different?
Or did I miss a step, which I need to do to get this game running?
Sincerely,
MasteryOff

I did some searching on this and what I could find on winehq would suggest you won't be able to get this to work due to the way the copy protection works. An overview is here:
https://wiki.winehq.org/Copy_Protection
That has a link for Starforce that shows the following:
[url]https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3260[/url[
The last modification to that was in 2019. It shows as closed/abandoned so I don't believe it will work. I tried searching the appdb and that would also appear to indicate it will not work.
It all has to do with the way they implemented copy protection.

You could try wine 5.10, that was the first version with a fix for that particular bug, to check that it ever worked. Unfortunately it's difficult to tell if there were other bugfixes implementing some other needed functionality without a bunch of reading through old bug reports. It's possible it never worked but no one bothered to file a bug for your specific game. In that case you could do that to have some chance of someone working out a fix.

I also tried searching for it, but like you said, it doesn't workfargodwe wrote: ↑Sun Jun 13, 2021 5:51 pm I did some searching on this and what I could find on winehq would suggest you won't be able to get this to work due to the way the copy protection works. An overview is here:
