I've enabled font smoothing with Winetricks, and I prefer Wine at around 120 DPI or less, although I could potentially handle slightly higher.
At 120 DPI, it seems that most fonts >= 10 pt. are anti-aliased, while most fonts < 10 pt. are not, such as in Wine apps, foobar2000, and MS Office 2007.
At 149 DPI, some small fonts become smooth. But even at 168, some small fonts remain aliased.
Changing the font size (and font) for Menu Text and Message Box Text items hasn't seemed to help, and neither has using Resource Hacker to change every instance of < 10 pt. with 10 pt. in the theme .msstyles file.
Unfortunately, I don't recall whether this behavior was present in 5.x.

Anti-aliasing small fonts without increasing DPI?
