Running portable apps in Linux from a Windows partition

Post by Megafrog »

To streamline my backups I don't want to have to dig into some program's folder to know exactly where my settings are when I do backups. So I just backup 100% of everything as a portable app whenever I can. That's why I use the free software from www.portableapps.com on my windows hard drive. Linux has an equivalent with Orbital Apps but I want to use the same programs with the same settings on both OSes.

I'm now using a Linux partition as well. Are there directions on how to use Wine in Linux to run Portable Apps that are installed on (more like extracted to) my Windows partition? Results are spotty when simply using Wine targeted to apps in the Windows partition while running Linux. XnView worked perfectly but Firefox would not work at all - and PA Firefox is something people that works when unpacking the PA version with Wine. In my case, of course, the FF that I want to use is already unpacked and has been living on my Windows partition.

Doing web searches for this is difficult because everything in a search seems to be about how Wine works only on the Linux partition. I want to run it in Linux but from the app that is already on the Windows partition where it is now.

That's my ideal workflow. Is this an impossible dream?
