SUGGESTION: Remove Wine IE from future releases of WINE

Post by code_exec »

The WINE devs have preloaded their own version of IE with WINE that comes in every WINEPREFIX you make for a long time now. This not only annoys users who need to install older versions of IE (for example, because an app may depend on an older version) but can't because 'a newer version is already installed' but also violates Microsoft's copyright by creating a web browser under the same name as theirs. I managed to install IE 11 in a 32-bit WINEPREFIX using the offline installer, but attempting to launch IE launched WINE IE. This is probably because the installer saw a version of IE already there and decided to speed up and finish. If it weren't for that, I might have actually been able to test the IE 11 browser itself in WINE. So please, WINE devs, remove your own version of IE from WINE starting from WINE 3.22 and later.

Wine-gecko provides HTML rendering for all apps running Wine, not just Wine's IE replacement, so no, it's not going to be dropped. However, it is a separate package, and nothing requires you to install it.

If an app you use does not work with wine-gecko, you should file a bug for that.

Installing Microsoft's IE in Wine requires a lot of dll overrides, which is why it is not supported. If you must install it, use winetricks, which will do all the workarounds needed.

FYI, names cannot be copyrighted.

It should be removed. WINE Gecko can stay of course, since it is an HTML rendering engine. But WINE IE has got to go.

The goal of WINE is to provide a windows-like environment, this includes IE and its DLLs. This doesn't break the install of IE though, winetricks can install it just fine. IE11 doesn't work because it doesn't work, not because WINE already has IE.
