Hi guys,

After installing nr2003 on my laptop running Ubuntu 18.04 with the latest edition of wine (i tried it on both the development and stable versions of wine) I ran setup.exe to setup the graphics and I came across this.

This used to work on Ubuntu 16.04 (on the same laptop as now). It even worked with the intel integrated graphics set I have inside of my laptop (again, same as now). But it doesn't work. Can somebody try it and see if there's a workaround?

Thanks in advance.

First thing you could try with an old game like this is use a clean 32-bit Wineprefix set to Windows XP
https://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#How_do_I_cr ... _system.3F

If you don't have any progress, please post the terminal output, including you Wine command.

That guide was very confusing, so I don't know if I did it wrong.

Here's what I did:
I ran WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=/home/nathaniel/.wine/drive_c winecfg. It opened winecfg, and I set Default Settings to Windows XP. I clicked apply then ok. I then moved the Papyrus folder (which was where the game installation was) inside the new drive. It opened and put the same error messages there. I then ran WINEPREFIX=/home/nathaniel/.wine/drive_c/drive_c wine start /unix /home/nathaniel/.wine/drive_c/drive_c/Papyrus/NASCAR Racing 2003 Season/config.exe. The same thing happened. Did I do something wrong?

You almost got it right. But probably your default WINEPREFIX is damaged now.
- Backup and remove the ~/.wine folder
- Create a new WINEPREFIX set to WinXP
Code:
WINEARCH=win32 wine winecfg

- Install Nascar Racing 2003
Wine remembers you created a 32-bit prefix, so you don't have to tell it again
After start use /unix and you can use a Linux filenames.
Code:
wine start /unix /path/to/the/installer/Setup.exe

- Try to run the game
Code:
wine start /unix /path/to/the/exe/NR2003.exe

Did you install the 32-bit glx packages?

If you run a 32bit DirectX or OpenGL application, you also need the 32bit modules for your GPU.
For Nvidia you need: nvidia-driver-libs-i386
Intel: libgl1-mesa-glx:i386 or libglx-mesa0:i386

both were already installed:
nathaniel@nathaniel-Inspiron-N5010:~$ sudo apt install libgl1-mesa-glx:i386

Can you also post the output of
Code:
# Install inxi if necessary
# sudo apt install inxi
inxi -G

@jkfloris

If you recommend using inxi, for Ubuntu users.
It's probably worth noting that the standard repository version of inxi, for Ubuntu, is completely obsolete.
I'd recommend a PPA, e.g.: Ubuntu PPA: Inxi (perl version).
The Perl version gives clearer output and is actually being maintained...

Thanks for the tip!

Just to be sure. Did you install the game or did you just copy the files? The latter doesn't always work.

Things you could try:
* Start the game in the game directory
Code:
cd "~/.wine/drive_c/Papyrus/NASCAR Racing 2003 Season"
wine config.exe

* Use the old Direct Draw Renderer
Code:
winetricks ddr=gdi
wine  wine start /unix "~/.wine/drive_c/Papyrus/NASCAR Racing 2003 Season/config.exe"

If this doesn't work or make things worse. Reset it to the default
Code:
winetricks ddr=opengl

* Make sure your GPU modules are properly installed. Do you have issues with other 32-bit games?

@allstargamer

I'm not sure what you are referring to there?? :?

Anyway...

Can you post the output from:
Code:
export WINEDEBUG=+timestamp,+tid,+wgl,+d3d
wine start /unix '/home/nathaniel/.wine/drive_c/Papyrus/NASCAR Racing 2003 Season/config.exe' &>~/wine-development-3.21_d3d_wgl_log.txt

That will save the file: wine-development-3.21_d3d_wgl_log.txt in your regular Linux HOME directory.

Please run (first):
Code:
sudo apt-get install xclip

if you don't already have the xclip utility installed!!

To copy a file in your standard Desktop Environment (Gnome, KDE, etc.) copy-paste buffer:
Code:
cat ~/wine-development-3.21_d3d_wgl_log.txt | xclip -i -selection clipboard

If you are posting terminal commands or output in your forum posts... Then please, please use the forum Code tags:
Code:
...

Choose Full editor when posting a reply.
Select a block of terminal commands+output then click the Code button (above the edit box).
Without Code tags your posts quickly become totally unreadable... Hence why I become less inclined to lend a hand...

Ta
Bob

This time it loaded the config.exe without errors. Unfortunately, like all the other papyrus games i have in wine, it says "failed to load selected display adapter". Even though it saves your configurations for graphics, it crashes the game after the intro. This is now what i need help with.

Sure... But we're still waiting for a Wine terminal log (with the wgl and d3d debug channels enabled)!
From whatever component of the game is failing for you.

Some of those commands won't produce any output. That's why I documented what they did.

I'm up for helping folks, but with a bit of "tough love"!
Sometimes it's better for you to figure why something didn't work yourself...
Rather than just have someone else explaining it in excruciating detail.
You'll thank me for this later on... You'll learn more and retain the information better. Honest! 8)

So think about what you're trying to do a bit and then sleep on the problem.
If you spend ages banging on an issue or problem - you can actually start moving backwards (in my experience).

I ran the "wine start /unix" command after i read your post, and it has the same outcome as when i ran
Code:
winetricks ddr=gdi

the code above was what caused config.exe to work before i used /unix.

In the config.exe program there are multiple options. Which options did you try? Which options can you set successfully?

Also we still missing the terminal output Bob Wya asked
Code:
WINEDEBUG=+timestamp,+tid,+wgl,+d3d wine start /unix '/home/nathaniel/.wine/drive_c/Papyrus/NASCAR Racing 2003 Season/config.exe' &>~/wine-development-3.21_d3d_wgl_log.txt

There is a new file in your home directory: wine-development-3.21_d3d_wgl_log.txt
Please post the content of this text file.
