I'm running Debian Stretch, I did have Wine installed via Debians repositary but ran apt-get remove wine and then tried following the instructions at https://wiki.winehq.org/Debian
I presume the last responses are not expected?

Some searching suggests something happened to /etc/apt/trusted.gpg and to delete or rename it and try again.

Thankyou, that did resolve the issue and I was then able to install the stable branch.
