Ableton Live 10 Trial / Running Windows Browser

Post by tavasti »

Hi!

I would like to try Ableton Live. They have 30 day trial, but it needs to register online. By clicking register, it opens page on my firefox, but unfortunately firefox can't talk with ableton.

Second step, set wine Internet Explorer as default browser for wine. Ableton opens it, I can get license from web, but it never gets to Ableton. So most likely I would need bit better browser, running in wine. Or any other tips?

Tried this far:
- Mozille Firefox 64 bit, installs but crashes on startup
- Midori, Crashes after opening before opening any page
- IE 11 for win7, installs some updates, then tries to open some page on previous default browser (midori), which crashes
- IE8 for vista, won't install

My system is Ubuntu 18.04, running winehq stable built for Ubuntu Artful.

Ableton support says that offline registration is not possible.

I suppose key to registration is run real windows browser in wine, but I really can't get any real browser running. Hints for that?

Isn't it possible to create an account in Ubuntu on:
https://www.ableton.com/en/login/?next= ... d_license/
Login on the Ableton Live page and download your free copy?

Ableton Live 10 trial does not have any option to input license key. Only way is that Live asks browser to register, and browser some way (don't know how) communicates with Live, passing registration data.

Ableton uses an unknown protocol handler, but it works.
- Set your default webbrowser back to your Ubuntu Firefox or Chrome (I used the Chromium based browser Vivaldi)
- Launch Ableton
- Run "journalctl -f" in a terminal window
- Press the "Authorize with ableton.com" button
- In the terminal you will see a line with:

Code: Select all

...
ableton://authorize?license_id=6650024&session_id=4-78554142962387653520180603212307-98C607C8968591234567890747DBF8FC
...
Don't use this code, because I made it up.

- Quit Ableton
- Run (in the same Wineprefix where you have installed Ableton)

Code: Select all

wine iexplore.exe "ableton://authorize?license_id=6650024&session_id=4-78554142962387653520180603212307-98C607C8968591234567890747DBF8FC"

Thanks, but unfortunately no success this far.

1) I use xfce / awesome wm, and from them, nothing will end up to systemd, so nothing happens in journalctl
2) nothing relevant seen in .xsession-errors and I also tried to start browser from terminal, nothing shown there.
3) I suppose you are testing with some other version, Live 10 Trial shows button "Start your free trial" instead of "Authorize with ableton.com"

My firefox is rolling for a while in 'Communicating with live' but it timeouts. With wine's own iexplorer I could get one step closer.
