64-bit Wine for Windows 10 to run Abbyy FineReader 14

Post by RobertP2 »

I installed Wine on Ubuntu MATE 17.10 so that I could run Abbyy FineReader 14 under Windows 10. When installing it appears that Wine is still in the 32-bit world. Also when I tried to configure Wine, the latest version of Windows was 7.

How to I install Wine. And when might I expect a 64-bit version capable of supporting Windows 10?

I don't know where you got Wine from, but it obviously wasn't here, and it sounds like whatever version you're using is grossly outdated. 64 bit Wine has been available since version 1.2; that's over 7 years ago. The current development release is 3.6.

Use the WineHQ packages. https://wiki.winehq.org/Ubuntu

As for the Windows version, the current default is Windows 7. You can change that to Windows 10 in winecfg in current Wine, though you really shouldn't unless the application absolutely requires it.

I got Wine from your link https://wiki.winehq.org/Ubuntu and the first thing it requires is to support 32-bit code. If Wine has been 64-bit for 7 years, why is this necessary. I followed all the directions on the web-page. It just doesn't result in a 64-bit Wine that actually works.

Are there up to date instructions for 64-bit?

You need to enable 32 bit support because 32 bit libraries are needed to run 32 bit applications. Pure 64 bit Wine is not supported and would be largely useless, because most Windows applications are still 32 bit, and even 64 bit ones often contain 32 bit parts (esp. installers).

The WineHQ packages are 64 bit and will run 64 bit Windows applications, but they also include the 32 bit parts needed to run 32 Windows applications on a 64 bit system. The default wineprefix created will be 64 bit.

If you've tried installing this app and had problems, that's what you should have posted along with the specific details instead of asking a generic question about the availability of 64 bit Wine. FYI, several bugs have been filed for problems with older versions of ABBYY Finereader, and you may be running into one or more of them.
