If your applications are running 16-bit code it's worth trying to run them directly with DOSBox ...
This a native Linux application / emulator.
If you want to stick with Wine (which will probably leverage DOSbox internally anyway)...
You might get better results by setting the Wine Windows version to Windows 98 or earlier...
