ABCEXplorer on Lubuntu - noob

Post by chrissss »

I'm trying to get ABCExplorer running on Lubuntu 16.04 LTS 64-bit (on AcerOne with 2GB RAM). I've been on Lubuntu for a while but this is my first effort with Wine.

I tried it once without success. I installed Wine 1.6 from the Lubuntu SW Ctr. Wine appeared to install OK but ABCExplorer didn't start. A little research brought me here and the app DB page
https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager. ... &iId=22368
Which says it worked in 2010 on Wine 1.1 on openSUSE 11.3, with wsh56 needed.
I tried installing wsh56 with winetricks. The terminal returned some message about 32-bit process on 64-bit OS, but -- not smart -- I didn't keep that message.

So I decided to back up, read up, and start again with more info + more care. I removed my original Wine installation, and all the menu items + supporting files, following another thread on this forum.

From this page - https://wiki.winehq.org/Ubuntu , I've added the 32-bit architecture, and added the repository. Now I'm not sure of next steps + will appreciate advice.

- It seems there's 32 + 64-bit versions of Wine, and that the 32-bit is more mature+ stable. ABCExplorer is surely a 32-bit app and not CPU intensive so the 32-bit version seems better for ABCExplorer. However, I may want the added power of 64-bit for another application in the future. Can I install both- maybe separate WINEPREFIX ?

- What version (32 or 64) is installed with "apt-get install --install-recommends winehq-stable" ?

- Regarding wsh56:
-- are there more recent versions of wsh?
-- Should I try the latest version first, or try wsh56 first?
-- are there 32+64-bit versions of wsh? which one is best?
-- what steps to install wsh56? (winetricks?)

Thanks in advance.
