Mass Effect will not start

Post by twaee »

I have played Mass Effect 3 many times and it runs without error. I decided to delve deeper into the Mass Effect series and got the first Mass Effect. The problem is it won't run. I run the launcher it shows the wine desktop for a second the it show the "program MassEffectLauncher.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to quit" error. I ran it in the terminal to help y'all figure this out. Please help me as I really want to play the prequels.

Code: Select all

fixme:gstreamer:watch_bus decodebin4: Your GStreamer installation is missing a plug-in.
There's no way to tell from the console output which one, but the most likely culprits are the 32 bit libav and/or ugly plugins. You may have to get these from an outside repository; many distros don't include them in their main repository because of legal issues.

@twaee,

Are you using Ubuntu 17.04?
Are you using the Steam or Origin versions of Mass Effect 1?

thank you for responding. I am using 17.04.

Well I don't have either Steam nor Origin and there is no files in the folder that says it is the steam version, like in a lot of other games Ive played. So I think it is neither version, just plain vanilla Mass Effect 1.

I was looking online for a solution while waiting for you guys to respond and I found this in the pastebin. (https://pastebin.com/9f3xUFvq) I couldn't find what forum or thread this was pasted to, but this is exactly the same error, but different game. If you could help me find whatever thread this was posted to, the answer might be located there and would make this thread end much faster.

No random pastebin logs are not useful...

To get all the gstreamer-plugins available for install - see the output from:

Code: Select all

aptitude search 'gstreamer.*plugins'
The lazy way to fix your issue is to install all (non-dev / non-dbg) gstreamer1.0 packages (including 32-bit variants)... 8)

I've tested the Steam version of Mass Effect 1 (on Gentoo with Wine Staging 2.12 and all available multilib gstreamer plugins enabled).
Using a fix from the latest test submission (for Wine 2.10) got in-game sound fully working:

Code: Select all

export BIOENGINE_INI="$(find "${WINEPREFIX:-${HOME}/.wine}/drive_c" -iname "BIOEngine.ini")"
cp "${BIOENGINE_INI}" "${BIOENGINE_INI}.bak"
sed -i '/^\[ISACTAudio\.ISACTAudioDevice\]/aDeviceName=Generic Software\nUseEffectsProcessing=False' "${BIOENGINE_INI}"
See: WineHQ AppDB: Role Playing Games / Mass Effect / Steam ...

Also the game doesn't appear to need gstreamer anyway, as:

Code: Select all

wine reg.exe ADD "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\AppDefaults\MassEffect.exe\DllOverrides" "/v" "winegstreamer" "/t" "REG_SZ" "/d" ""
doesn't appear to cause any issues on my system... But YMMV and I've only really tested the game menus and intro videos briefly!

When I try to reinstall Java, it says it is already fully updated. This error occurs nearly every time I use apt-get to install something.

Then if I try to go onto the next step, this occurs:

It's generally recommended to use aptitude or synaptic - to try avoid these issues.
apt is really dumb - aptitude will at least try to offer you alternative solutions.

Maybe try (if you're dead set on using apt):

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install -f
sudo dpkg --configure -a

That code snippet won't work if you haven't sandboxed your working WINEPREFIX, with:

Code: Select all

winetricks sandbox
- as it won't search the symbolic links to directories in your user's HOME directory.

I'd generally recommend removing these symbolic links out to your HOME directory - otherwise all your saved games will be scattered in your HOME directory.
It's safer to have them fully self-contained in the same WINEPREFIX as the game code itself.

You can of course do the ini file tweak manually - see the most recent test submission for WineHQ AppDB: Role Playing Games / Mass Effect / Steam ...

Don't forget to test just disabling winegstreamer:

Code: Select all

wine reg.exe ADD "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\AppDefaults\MassEffect.exe\DllOverrides" "/v" "winegstreamer" "/t" "REG_SZ" "/d" ""

I have tried everything you have said and nothing seems to work. I downloaded synaptic and tried downloading the gstreamer files, it worked (but it did so before so it wasn't a relief). I tried fixing the Java problem by downloading the installers via synaptic, they wouldn't download. I also tried with aptitude and it wouldn't work. The "export BIOEngine_INI="$(find " replied with the same exact message as before. I'm not entirely sure what the "wine reg.exe ADD "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\AppDefaults\MassEffect.exe\DllOverrides" "/v" "winegstreamer" "/t" "REG_SZ" "/d" """ command is doing but it isn't fixing anything. I am thinking I may just download Windows to play these games. I have about 6 that aren't working and no progress it being made. This is really confusing because games that have taken more RAM and were more demanding (also directx 10) worked perfectly fine.

@twaee

The Linux Desktop isn't for everyone. Personally I wasn't comfortable using it full-time - till I got familiar with Gentoo GNU/Linux.
Which offers a degree of customisation and control - that binary distributions cannot touch.
But not everyone wants to make that time investment.
It took me about a decade to get to a point where I truely view the Linux Desktop as my "home".
That's talking from the perspective of someone with a Comp Sci degree background as well!

I'd advise just dabbling in GNU/Linux - till you are more comfortable using the ecosystem of tools (BASH, sed, awk, etc) and also how Wine works.
If you are getting "confused" a lot that probably shows you are getting a bit out of your "comfort zone"!

IMHO Ubuntu doesn't "just work" - in fact I find the distribution quite annoying.
The rather archaic Debian packaging format is difficult for new users to get their head around.
Then you get dependency issues - like yours - that users mysteriously cannot seem to resolve.

You might want to take a look at the Solus distribution...
As Ikey Doherty is attempting to overcome some of the limitations of many General Purpose distributions - which don't always fit well as a Desktop target.
Solus only targets the Linux Desktop.
It's one of the mutli-boot Linux distributions I have installed on my laptop.
It's got a nice semi-rolling release model and a nifty package manager (especially so - for a distribution that is only a year or two old) - very impressive!

Just my $0.02... 8)

Ok, I am going to keep Linux, but I will be partially switching to Windows (much as i hate windows) to be able to play games that I can't play on wine.
