Update confusion

Post by FlyingLlama »

Since upgrading to Ubuntu Xenial 16.04 my updates for Wine are not working as normal. The repository I'm using is ubuntu-wine "Ubuntu Wine Team" and I figured out how to update to Wine 1.8 by using apt-get install, but from there the instructions offered on the internet seem to discuss a new repository called wine-builds.

Can I still use the ubuntu-wine ppa to update to Wine 2.0 or has the wine-builds ppa now replaced it? What exactly is the difference between the two repositories?

The ubuntu-wine repository is maintained by the distro, and hasn't been consistently kept up-to-date for a couple of years, though it now seems to have the current stable release for Xenial. The wine-builds ppa is maintained by WineHQ, and contains up-to-date packages for the development and staging branches. https://wiki.winehq.org/Ubuntu
