Install/Run Irfanview using Wine

Post by Optiker »

Linux Mint, Rosa MATE (I think). I want to use WINE to install and run Irfanview, but don't know how. I tried following the tutorial at:
https://www.linux.com/learn/how-install ... ions-linux
but can't seem to make it work.

I don't see WINE in my app menu, but it is shown in Synaptic. In my menu, Winetricks is shown, but I can't seem to get through it. Irfanview is included as an app in the list, but I keep getting an error message that a checksum doesn't match and try re-DLing. Can anybody help?
Thanks!

@Optiker

You would want to add the official WineHQ Ubuntu PPA.
Then install the latest winehq-devel package - currently 2.2.

You would also want to update your winetricks script to the latest release... See WineHQ Wiki: Winetricks.

Try again - with these updated packages.
Certainly winetricks URL's and installer hashes need refreshing nearly every month (the Linux Mint package might be years out of date for all I know)...

IrfanView's installers require MFC42.DLL to function.
Download that for free from off the internet, or copy a recent version off a working, virus-free Windows computer.
Put the file into the c:\Windows\System32 equivalent directory of your wine installation and reboot.

Then, you should be able to install IrfanView and it's plugins.

I learned this from emailing the IrfanView author.
I wish he would just include the DLL in the installer or make a new installer that didn't require this,
but he didn't seem to comprehend this. But I also like his program very much.
And it does function on Ubuntu with modern Wine very well.

Maybe "winetricks mfc42" should be enough? Of course you need the latest winetricks version, since MS is changing the download links from time to time.
