I keep getting an error when I play the 95 version of sorry!

Post by zapper »

I was wondering if anyone knew any ways to get it to work,

Third eye productions and hasbro interactive made this game...

Yes its childish but I would love to be able to play it on linux without windows virtualbox, etc...

and of course without a cd rom...

but even with a cd rom i can't get it to work.

Here is my error:

error -1, General file transfer error. Please check your target location and try again.

Error Number:-1

Also If anyone can tell me how to get everything working, WITH only wine or winetricks/playonlinux let me know.

I don't mind if i have to enable some dlls or change a few things but tell me how to do this if possible.

I am using debian 8 64 bit in case that helps. and I compiled from source the latest stable version.

that is the error I get.

@zapper,

Never apologise for playing dumb computer games - it's not hurting anyone after all

Any reason why you aren't just using the WineHQ Debian packages ?? It seems to be real easy to mess up the multilib support part on Debian - so basically your Wine build ends up with broken 32-bit support = real bad  ... The lack of multilib development library support (these days), in Debian, is a PITA...

As a point of comparison building Wine on Arch or Gentoo is relatively easy!

If you're sure that your Wine build is sound - i.e. you've tested it with a few standard 32-bit Windows applications (i.e. the Windows version of firefox - you should be able to playback flash videos for example)... Otherwise just install the pre-built WineHQ binary packages.

If your application still is not playing ball (after the above)...
  1. Please detail what steps you've made to get it running. I.e. if you've changed the Wine Windows version to Windows 95, etc.
  2. Paste both terminal output and commands used to launch the game installer. Don't paste "edited" console output.
  3. If you're trying to launch the game from a native (Linux) GUI file manager - then that's probably why the installer is failing!
  4. Please use the forum Code tags:

    Code: Select all

Gotcha ;) If i had a joker or trollface I would put it here as a joke.

Read bottom,

I like Debian's as you can run it relatively freely without need for blobs in the kernel, etc, etc,

It should be, I was able to install certian dls with winetricks...

1: I need winetricks to make certian other programs work. because dotnet20 32 bit wasn't working otherwise...
2: The install does work but only for a short time.
3: yes I did use the gui method but I honestly don't know what else to do... not too familiar with command prompt on windows... xD but yeah I used wine program loader also.

So any ideas what I might do to conquer this problem?
I want to be completely free from needing windows of almost any kind, Except maybe wine which I will make an exception for ;)

Nothing wrong with that... But Wine is like a house of cards - you install too many native Windows libraries at once - then you'll inevitably find that some applications stop working. The Wine native libraries are the ones that are designed to be most compatible with the main Wine DLL shims: NTDLL.DLL, KERNEL32.DLL, etc.

So the recommended practice is to use 1 application / Wineprefix. See WineHQ FAQ: Wineprefix usage.
zapper wrote: 2: The install does work but only for a short time.
This is a somewhat indefinite statement??! The program either installs or it doesn't...

Setting up Windows applications under Wine is typically best done from the shell. I could expound on that statement... But suffice to say it's been born out by (sometimes bitter) experience...!! The primary mechanism for debugging Wine is through the console output - that console output has to be attached to user visible/accessible pipe or stream (e.g. the standard output in a terminal).

In general using Linux/BSD - without wading through a good introductory command line reference - will be plain sailing - till you hit a brick wall one day!! A very hard brick wall... I recommend something like The Linux Command Line - William Shotts

I actually don't think you know this, but... the installer actually worked on a ubuntu derivative called trisquel.

I tried using that and everthing worked until i tried to play the game...

Then i get this weird error about "handling unknown exception -1"

then it quits.

I tried that after i posted. but on debian 8 suffice to say, it didn't even install before it gave up towards the end of the install. thus it wanted me to reinstall it... ...

@zapper,

It's always a bad sign when someone regurgitates their first post verbatim and re-posts it.
Nobody ever solved a problem my endlessly repeating the same mistake... Myself included!
"Someone" isn't reading / acting on my posts.

Well you've made my point for me!
I don't own the game... So naturally I don't have a clue whether it works or not...
..But you do own the game...
So I've got to talk you through troubleshooting the game... But you can't troubleshoot Wine using purely GUI tools!!

The tl;dr version of this post is... I need you to meet me half-way!!
So are you up for doing a bit of command line troubleshooting on your game? I'll talk you through what to type - and why!! 8)

well, it does work and also, it uses obviously win32 but I don't know what is required to make it work...

Although, yes I am willing to work on it if you can help me,

Tell me what you need to know to help me.

Also, I am getting sick of this thing called captcha, it is such a dumb idea.

Even when i put my correct password in... it screws me pretty badly...

meh...

@zapper,

Right first steps then... Have you installed the pre-built WineHQ Debian binaries ?
Either winehq-devel or winehq-staging 1.9.15.

Slight problem, Those two packages do not exist in my repository and I have tried to add them just now and in the past.

It doesn't work as well as I would like, it gives me http error 404 whenever I try to add the wine repository for installing debian... to the repository sources list.

weird right?

Any idea how to get by that problem?

Yup, try this:

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
wget https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/Release.key
sudo apt-key add Release.key
sudo sh -c "echo 'deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/debian/ jessie main'>/etc/apt/sources.list.d/winehq.list"
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install winehq-devel
Report back on progress - after doing those steps (as a standard user - since sudo will take care of the root privileges).

ah interestingly enough, the debian documentation url is old and I had to look on other websites to realizer this..

so yes that part is fixed big time.

Now I have the correct url.

what's the next step then and also, how many steps would you say this would take?

All the following commands should be run under your standard Linux user account... Not as root !!

Phase 1

Setup a pure 32-bit Wineprefix (with no Syswow / 64-bit Windows program support):

Code: Select all

mkdir -p "${HOME}/.local/share/wineprefixes/"
cd "${HOME}/.local/share/wineprefixes/"
export WINEPREFIX="$PWD/sorry_32"
export WINEARCH=win32
wineboot
This will create a Virtual Windows installation aka Wineprefix in the directory:

Code: Select all

"${HOME}/.local/share/wineprefixes/sorry_32"
Why there? Well that's the directory where winetricks put's Wineprefixes by default... So why not?

All the following commands should be run under your standard Linux user account... Not as root !!

Phase 2

Now we attempt installation!
  1. Put your Sorry! CD-ROM in the CD drive.
  2. Mount the CD-ROM (with your native Linux File Manager GUI Window, etc).
  3. Run the winecfg command to configure your Wineprefix:

    Code: Select all

    export WINEPREFIX="${HOME}/.local/share/wineprefixes/sorry_32"
    winecfg
Notice how you do have to re-set the WINEPREFIX env variable every time that you start a new terminal tab / reboot / etc.
  4. Try setting the Windows version to Windows 98 initially (it's an old game):
    wine - winecfg - Windows version setting.png
  5. Check where your CD ROM was mounted:
    wine - winecfg - drives setting.png
You should see a Virtual Windows drive letter for your CD-ROM device and a mount point.
In this case D: happens to be my laptops DVD-drive with the Aliens Vs Predator Gold CD in it!!
The drive letter allocated, to your CD-ROM, may be different on your system!!
Take a note of the mapped drive letter.
Your system drives and paths will be a bit different from mine!!
  6. You can fire up the Sorry! installer with a command similar to:

    Code: Select all

    wine 'D:\SETUP.exe'
The drive letter may be different on your system!
I don't know what the actual name of the Sorry! game installer executable is...
Double check the installer executable filename (though SETUP.EXE is very popular  )...
You can do this by browsing the filesystem on the mounted CD drive!
Report back after this phase - if you get stuck or there is an error.
The console output from the installer will be useful to debug problems with the installation process.

I am not sure why, but I may have to reinstall wine because it is giving me some bizarre errors...

I will talk to you again after I remove everything wine and reinstall it.

My bad, you were right installing from source was not a good idea.

well seeing as I cannot edit that last post,

wine: cannot find L"C:\\windows\\system32\\--load.exe"

two things happened before I did what i mentioned i would do in the post before hand,
1: It gave me a severe warning error when i tried to load it,
General File location error -1 severe
that was the error...
2: it didn't change really anything but I think it may be because I have an E: drive? you see I am using a lenovo x200.
wine: cannot find L"C:\\windows\\system32\\--load.exe"
this error pops up when i try to load a program with wine through terminal emulator
it still happens even after I tried to fix the issue I was having.

Do you want me to post what just happened here?

this is the error: err:ntdll:RtlpWaitForCriticalSection section 0x7eadbd40 "syslevel.c: Win16Mutex" wait timed out in thread 0027, blocked by 0028, retrying (60 sec)

then the setup closes.

fixme:winediag:AUDDRV_GetAudioEndpoint Winepulse is not officially supported by the wine project
fixme:winediag:AUDDRV_GetAudioEndpoint For sound related feedback and support, please visit http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1960599
Winepulse support was added to Wine last year. Whatever version you are using is not only obsolete, it includes unsupported patches. Please upgrade to the current development release using the WineHQ package.

It as ubuntu 14.04's repository for wine. I am using a derivative of that distro called trisquel which is free software entirely.

It will be updated this year to be based off of ubuntu 16.04.

My point? For now I have an old version of wine... and since you ask, I will try your suggestion to get to the 1.8 version. :)

See WineHQ Download
I see packages for Ubuntu 14.04 right there!! Yes it's true!! That would the latest wine version: 1.9.16.

As for you PM... Look about 100 messages back in this thread... The ones with the pictures...
You need to setup a 32-bit Wineprefix to set your Wineprefix to versions earlier than Windows XP...
Why?? Because there never was a 64-bit release of these earlier Windows versions!!

Pardon my ignorance, I tried your method and it helped tremendously... I am going to try now to load it again and we will see if it works...

I will post the errors if any occur. my bad again, I was ignorant to post without thinking.

Bob, I see what you wrote, and it is kinda of offensive because I tried your instructions, but they will not work.

So I would appreciate it if you would stop pretending I am stupid. I have the slightest thought in my mind right now that you are in fact... not really annoyed but are instead mocking me. I really dislike that. I will ask you no more.
