cups-pdf printer not available

Post by Giorgio »

I need to create pdf file from a software installed in Wine but I don't see "print on file" option.
Just to check I tried to print from Notepad and again PDF isn't available.
Then it seems Wine don't recognize cups-pdf.

Wine 1.7.51 installed in OpenMandriva Linux 2014.2 64 bit

Wine should recognize cups-pdf, but it's not as "print to file"; cups-pdf (or pdf printer) should just be listed as a printer.

When I write "print to file" is what I see among printers in Linux. I don't know how to cups-pdf appears in Wine.
Anyway no cups-pdf available in my software nor in Notepad (in Wine).
Of course in Linux cups-pdf is available and working.

It should be listed in the dropdown list in the Name field on the Print dialog along with any other printers you have installed.

It's clear to me what you means but I haven't any CUPS-PDF among printers.

Do you have the 32 bit cups libs installed? That's the one thing I can think of to check, though not having that would also prevent your other printers from working in Wine, too.

If that's not it, then I really don't know what the problem is. You could try upgrading Wine as your version is old, but cups-pdf should work with it. I've been using cups-pdf with Wine since before 1.0, and it has always just worked.

I've quite a lot of package including "cups" in the name installed, some of them have "lib" and "cups" in the name. Many other are not installed but available. Not easy for me to understand which package is needed.
Have you any idea on which name the "essential" package should have?

Package names vary greatly by distro, so no, I have no idea what the exact name would be on OpenMandriva. What you want are the 32 bit cups libraries.

Ok. I'll try to ask in forum regarding my distribution.
Thanks for help.

Solution is really simple: install a new printer in OpenMandriva selecting "Generic CUPS-PDF" among devices available. The name of new printer will be Generic-CUPS-PDF-Printer and will appear in printers list of Wine applications.
I've been mislead because just after installing CUPS_PDF I have a “Print to File” option among printers. But this option that's not a printer is available in several Linux software not in Wine applications. Wine applications see only printer normally installed.
