There's nothing in there related to sound, and it's very short. Did you actually play an mp3? You need to.

I can reproduce the problem. Installing quartz and devenum with winetricks improves the sound greatly, though there's still some occasional stuttering.

Thanks for trying it. Do you mean that the problem can't be fixed completely (for playing all MP3s in wmp10 and OverDrive)? How do I install those two programs? (They aren't in my winetricks GUI.)

Install them from the command line:

Code: Select all

winetricks quartz devenum

Thanks! Playing MP3s in Overdrive works much better now (yay!).

I want to test playing them in wmp10 also but nothing happens when I click on it via the menu through wine programs. I tried a command and got the result below:
:~$ wine start 'C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe'

I noticed that WMP10 does not exit properly, so make sure there are no background processes still running from OverDrive before trying to start WMP on its own.

One more thing occurred to me that I don't think you realize: you only need OverDrive to download the files, not to play them. Since mp3s are not DRM-protected, you should be able to play them in any native media player.

Thanks so much for all your patient help.

Yes I was very pleased to discover the other day that Overdrive MP3s play fine in Rhythmbox (I mentioned this in a previous post but probably didn't specify that I was referring to MP3s downloaded through Overdrive rather than just MP3s that I already had). If I'd realised this in the beginning I wouldn't have been as concerned to get the other things working - but it is good to have all the software working properly if possible.

As you suggest, wmp10 doesn't open if I already have Overdrive running. Other than closing Overdrive, how do I stop its background processes from running? (This doesn't matter that much, but would be handy to know.)

With Overdrive closed, I get the following results when I try to open wmp10 and Adobe Digital Editions via the terminal (do I have the commands wrong?):

~$ wine start 'C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe'
fixme:exec:SHELL_execute flags ignored: 0x00000100

Re: Media Console "serious problem" so I can't play audio

Post by dimesio »

OverDrive needs WMP, so you would have to close OverDrive to stop it. WMP may still not close properly, in which case you would have to kill it manually. I usually do it from KDE's system monitor, but you can do it from the command line with

Code: Select all

killall wmplayer.exe
When using Windows-style paths, just use wine in the command line, not wine start.

That worked. It opens and I get a bunch of script that I'll just post part of in case it's not normal:

I've got Adobe Digital Editions but haven't been able to open it, have tried several commands but don't seem to be getting it right yet. It doesn't open via the menu (wine-programs).

$ wine 'C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Digital Editions\DigitalEditions.exe'
wine: cannot find 'C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Digital Editions\DigitalEditions.exe'
[name]@[name]-Latitude-D620:~$ wine 'C:\Program Files\Adobe Digital Editions\DigitalEditions.exe'
wine: cannot find 'C:\Program Files\Adobe Digital Editions\DigitalEditions.exe'

Wine Explorer opened (I don't know why/how) but I can't get Digital Editions to open in there either.

Your console output indicates the executable wasn't found, so you either don't have it installed, or you got something wrong in the path.

I think winetricks has a verb for installing Adobe Digital Editions, which will download it and take care of the prerequisites for you. If not, install .NET 4.0 and corefonts with winetricks to a separate wineprefix, and then install ADE to that wineprefix.

I can see DigitalEditions.exe in the folder. The path as I see it on my menu is:
.wine\drive_c\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Digital Editions 4.0\DigitalEditions.exe

I've installed it a couple of times, done "repair installation", gone through the "agree to terms" etc.

In winetricks GUI Adobe Digital Editions is ticked as cached.
Would a command be to install .NET be: wine .NET

The command would be

Code: Select all

WINEPREFIX=/path/to/wineprefix winetricks dotnet40 corefonts
Use the actual path to the wineprefix, and it can't be the one you have WMP and OverDrive installed in. .NET needs a completely clean wineprefix.

FYI, you could have found that command yourself by running winetricks list-all.

Adobe is currently in the same Program Files folder as wmp10, overdrive and internet explorer.

I also noticed a .adobe folder in the same folder as .wine. And there's a Microsoft.NET folder in wineprefix\drive_c\windows\Microsoft.NET

I entered the command:
WINEPREFIX=/home/[name]/wineprefix winetricks dotnet40 corefonts
And that seemed to work.

I don't know if I've installed it to a "separate wineprefix" as I didn't set up anything new... (I'm still feeling pretty lost with all this in case you can't tell.) How can I tell if I've got things in the right place, and how do I install Adobe to a separate winprefix?

There's currently one wineprefix folder that I can see, and in the Program Files folder there're three folders: Common Files, Internet Explorer, and Microsoft.NET. There's also a Microsoft.NET folder in the windows folder, as I mentioned above.

Well, you've just created a wineprefix named "wineprefix" in your home directory and installed dotnet40 and corefonts to it. It's not the most descriptive name for a wineprefix, but it should work. Install things to it by setting the WINEPREFIX variable when you run the installer, the same way you did when you ran winetricks. http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#wineprefix

I'm sure there was already a wineprefix folder already there as I described it in my last post before running the command you suggested. I think with the command I added a second Microsoft.NET folder to the already existing wineprefix folder. Perhaps all that doesn't matter.

I don't understand the wineprefix instructions.
I have ADE_4.0_Installer and ADE_4.0_Installer.zip in my downloads folder (and Adobe Digital Editions 4.0 in .wine). I tried right-clicking on the DigitalEditions.exe file in the ADE_4.0_Installer and opening with winetricks, wine program loader and wine installer but none of them worked.
What command do I install it to the wineprefix with?
WINEPREFIX=/home/[name]/wineprefix winetricks Adobe Digital Editions 4.0?

Installing to a wineprefix other than the default has to be done from the command line, and that is exactly what the section of the FAQ that I linked you to tells you to do.
What command do I install it to the wineprefix with?
Assuming you're installing to a wineprefix named "wineprefix" in your home directory:

Code: Select all

WINEPREFIX=/home/[name]/wineprefix wine /path/to/installer
Use your actual username and the real path to the installer.

Brilliant - it worked. It's wonderful to be able to access the digital library resources.

I got the correct command path after a couple of tries: :)
WINEPREFIX=/home/[name]/wineprefix wine /home/[name]/Downloads/ADE_4.0_Installer.exe

Thank you very much for all of your help.
