steam error upon starting ubuntu 12.10

steam installed perfeclt fine, but once i start steam via any means i get the error

"Steam.exe (main exception): To run Steam, you must first connect to the Internet"

i have tried deleting the clientregistry.blob but i get the same thing.

I did some looking and i someone said that steams storepage is unsupported, and to get steam to work i will have to run steam with -silent. however i dont know how to apply -silent to steam. any help?
