CoD4 under wine - issues

Post by Mishrito » Mon Dec 31, 2012 1:24 pm

I have Wine 1.5.10 installed under Ubuntu Studio 12.04 (uses XFCE 4.8). Now I have Cod4 already installed from the time I had Windows 7. Right clicking the exe file and executing using Wine Windows Program Loader opens it up and I can hear all the sounds and music but on the display I get a black screen. I tried installing from scratch using PlayonLinux too. It installs fine and patches up to v1.7 without problems but opening it up gives the same issue. Can hear sounds and music but there is a black screen. I can click all the menus and it takes me there too (I can tell by the sound), however I cannot see a thing. Except this place in the Mods menu and player select menu which shows something. I ahve attached the screen shot. This means the program is running fine except the textures aren't loading properly right? Oh and Ive already got DirectX installed properly.

Neither running from a Windows partition nor PlayOnLinux scripts are supported here, and installing real DirectX is generally not recommended. Your Wine version is also old.

Install it in a clean wineprefix using the current development release of plain Wine. If it still doesn't work, post terminal output.

Thanks for the reply. I've managed to completely remove wine and also removed PoL. However I seem to be having trouble installing the latest development version (1.5.21 I believe). I have added the wine ppa to my sources but "sudo apt-get install wine1.5" gives "Package wine1.5 is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

E: Package 'wine1.5' has no installation candidate".

Don't know why that's happening though. Synaptic doesn't show any version beyond the stable 1.4.

Thanks :)

Ubuntu usually only packages the development release for the current version of the distro.

Ok thanks for the link. I was pretty sure that I had added the correct ppa, but deleting the old entry and adding the ppa you linked to worked. Now I have installed the latest version of Wine, v1.5.21.

I installed the game again from scratch and did not install DirectX with it since I got to know now (^^; sorry) that Wine already comes with DX9. So I started the game again, and it is giving me exactly the same issue.
Oh and one more thing; immediately after isntalling Wine gave the message that I've attached in the screenshot. After that it tried giving me the error details but nothing came uo even after 20 mins so I closed it. Is that normal? Should I let that be open longer?

Thanks :D

I let this window be open for about 20 mins, still didn't output anything. So I closed it.

I ran the program from terminal and I've attached the terminal output. It's in an archive because for some reason the forum won't allow me to attach plain text files.

I suppose people might feel uncomfortable downloading an unknown archive from the internet so here's the terminal output in the post itslef. I should have done this earlier.

It's an integrated i3 sandy bridge. I am not worried about my system not being able to handle it because I could run the game at 60 fps at mid settings when I had W7.

You could try to install latest intel drivers, there are a few Ubuntu repositories for that, just don't use xorg edgers (they are really bleeding edge). The intel video driver should be something like "xf86-video-intel-2.20", where 2.20 is the version number. For details how to install you should ask in a Ubuntu forum.

Alright I fixed it. Basically the textures were not loading so I had to install this library over here which is not included by default in Ubuntu because of copyright issues.

The textures are now properly being loaded and everything is working fine now. Thanks to everyone who replied. Now I gotta go and post this in the WINE CoD4 HQ page too.
