Installation of Foxit Reader using WINE in LMDE

Post by Horatio »

Hi all,
I just successfully installed WINE 1.4.1 to LMDE 201204 UP5 64-bit.
Consequently, I downloaded RadioSure (<http://www.radiosure.com/downloadz/downloadz-select/> ex Local mirror),
LingoPad (<http://www.ego4u.com/en/lingopad>),
WordWeb (<http://wordweb.info/free/>) and
Foxit Reader (<http://www.foxitsoftware.com/downloads/>).

WINE 1.4.1 installed RadioSure, LingoPad and WordWeb without any problems and are running flawlessly.
However I have no such luck with Foxit Reader. The installation of Foxit seemed to be okay, Foxit icons are displayed in the Applications Menu and on the Desktop but it won't run. The 'pop-up' window indicates the following:
[quote]
Program Error
The program Foxit Reader.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
This can be caused by a program or a deficiency in Wine. You may want to check the Application Database for tips about running this application.
[unquote]

A list of further details of this program error has been uploaded and is attached to this post (backtrace.txt).

I did check WINE's Application Database and also Googled for approprite 'fixes' but am still empty handed and kindly request assistance to rectify this defect. TIA.

Your Wine version is old; upgrade to the latest development release. If it still crashes, post terminal output. http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#get_log

Thanks for response.

Before I embark on your suggested course of action would you (or any other WINE expert) please bear with me and please consider the following:

As stated in my original post WINE version 1.4.1 installed and is running several other applications without any problems. Foxit installed but ceases to function properly. In fact I just added Office 2003 flawlessly as well.

I installed on my wife's laptop Foxit to ZorinOS 64-bit using WINE version 1.4 (a slightly 'older' version) with no problems whatsoever.

According to http://www.winehq.org/download the latest stable release is Wine 1.4.1, and the latest development release is Wine 1.5.18 which suggests that it is a beta release. As I am not a technical person am rather leave products which is still in the development or test state to the experts.

Is there really no other 'fix' available to make Firefox running in LMDE 64-bit?

FYI, I downloaded Foxit Reader and it works fine on my system in 1.5.18.

I envy you that you're able to manage beta ware and FoxitReader is working. Unlike me, you must be a very experienced user and your original response to my problem is obviously directed to skilled operators.

But I'd better heed sound advice...
http://www.winehq.org/download/debian
"Warning: These are beta packages
This means they will periodically suffer from regressions, and as a result an update may break functionality in Wine. If the latest stable release of Wine (currently Wine 1.4.1) works for you, then you may not want to use these beta packages."

Anyway, for what it'ss worth, I finally unriddled this issue.
The Foxit Reader will launch when right-clicking on a PDF document 'Open With ==> Foxit Reader'.
I know that this is only a partial fix as the problem as per my original post still exists but I can live with that.
It seems to me that the stable version of WINE isn't so bad after all. Thanks for taking the time looking at my posts.
Bye.

Hi, are you still using wine 1.4.1? If I understand you correctly, FoxitReader is giving this error message, when you click on the desktop icon of Foxit? If you actually can open PDFs with FoxitReader via "Open With", then there's clearly some misconfiguration on your system. Maybe the parameters (given to FoxitReader) in the desktop link are messed up, unfortunately it would be quite technical to explain (and the details depend on window manager etc), imo the best thing for you would be to get a friend with deeper knowledge to fix that.

Yes, I am using the recommended stable version 1.4.1 of WINE.

Yes, your understanding is correct. FoxitReader is giving this error message clicking onto either 'desktop' Foxit icon or the Foxit icon located in the Application Menu.

Your explanation makes sense - even with my limited skills and knowledge I didn't think that replacing a 'stable' software with a 'beta' version would solve this problem! And it basically confirms that a newer version or beta version of WINE would have made no difference but may have caused additional problems to my existing installed applications.

Well, I rely on advice from various fora and my circle of friends don't have specialized knowledge in relation to computers and software. And since it is now established that this problem is obviously not related to the WINE software I shall try to get a fix from more relevant fora. Therefore I marked this topic as [SOLVED].
(Besides, I can live with the existing condition and may reinstall my OS if required).
Many thanks for useful response.

I had the same problem. I fixed it by opening a pdf using 'Open With'. Once in Foxit, I went to Preferences and under 'General' unselected the 'Show Start Page' button. Now it opens fine. Hope that helps!
