No programs will work with WINE
I've upgraded from Slackware 13.37_64 to 14.0_64. During that upgrade I updated to WINE 1.4.1 using a Slack build. It installed perfect and wine does work from what I can make out. I've also updated to the latest NVIDIA driver for my machine and Slackware 14.0_64. (295.59 I believe)
However, none of my Windows programs will work. I was trying Wizard 101 which did download and the splash screen comes up, but eventually blinks out . Because I always have to play around to get this program to work I assumed that was the issue and I haven't hit the magic combination of tweeks to get it running, howevere none of my other Windows programs will run either. The wine glass will come up and flash as a mouse cursor. The wine loader will pop up at the bottom of the screen in the task bar. But after a few seconds of waiting the glass and task disappear with no program or error.
I have used wine tricks to install IE8 and direct X9 but still nothing. I've also installed Flash 11.
In short, does this sound familar and is there something I have forgotten? Do I need to install the MF Class or Dot.Net. ?
Thanks in advance

Re: No programs will work with WINE
Wizard101 does not require any tweaks whatsoever. It works perfectly out of the box for me on 1.5.16, and the same for my daughter, who is using 1.4.1.
It sounds like you've caused your own problem by installing a lot of unnecessary garbage. Delete the wineprefix and start over.

Re: No programs will work with WINE
Thanks for the feed back. I have uninstalled all wineprefixes and even uninstalled wine. I then went back with a binary for Slackware by Alien Bob (Wine 1.5.??) . Even with NO prefixes, there are no better results. It lead to this question. Is there a difference between 64 and 32 bit. I installed 64bit because I'm running Slackware 14.0_64. However, I previously was running 13.37_64 with a 32 version of Wine. Does the 64bit wine mean I can only run 64bit Windows programs? Or is it just a better fit of Wine to a 64 bit Linux?
Either way I think I ‘m going to try and use a 32 bit tonight. As I said it's what I ran on 13.37_64 and I ran Wizard / Old Windows games (MAME / Nesticle) . I’ll keep the group posted.
Thanks in advance for the input.

Re: No programs will work with WINE
Theoretically all 32 bit apps should work in Wine's WoW64, but the reality is that many don't. I'm on 64 bit, but I routinely install 32 bit apps to 32 bit wineprefixes to avoid problems.
You can create a 32 bit wineprefix with
(use the actual path), then install your apps to that. http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#wineprefix
You can create a 32 bit wineprefix with
Code: Select all
WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=/path/to/wineprefix winecfg

Is it possible you're using a 64 bit wine only? How are you installing wine, through slackware's package manager?

Re: No programs will work with WINE
I installed the 64 from a slack built txz file. However last night I removed it and installed 1.4.1 ,it's off a 32 bit installation. It was a slack hold but from the source. Did t make any difference. I did have o e program throw up a windows border for a millisecond but like the others it drops out and the task button disappears.
I'll look at going to an older version later this weekend. Maybe the new NVIDIA driver is causing my issue. Time will tell
Thanks

Hello Ace Blackwell,
Maybe you need some libraries. maybe multilib ones.

What we really need is some terminal output that might give us a clue.

Re: No programs will work with WINE
Does any one have any suggestions for commands. I haven't had any errors for installation and I run the programs from KDE. It doesn't give an error. It just flashes for a sec and drops out. Wizard 101 will even let me login. Then it brings up the splash screen then hesitates for a few seconds and then drops out with no error. I'll try to start the program from the prompt in a terminal to see if it gives an error.
Also I have installed all of Alien Bobs multilibs but at your suggestion, I've reinstalled them and reinstalled wine 1.4.1 32bit. No luck
Thanks

Re: No programs will work with WINE
Your subject line says no programs work. Does that include Wine's own apps--notepad, winecfg, etc.?

Winecfg works and when wizard101 comes up, the IE7 comes up. But won't go any further. I have few arcade emulators that worked in my previous setup but not now. The window borders will pop up for a split sec. Then drops out with no error.
Re: No programs will work with WINE
Do you have native IE7 installed? You shouldn't. If you do, reinstall to a clean wineprefix.

Re: No programs will work with WINE
Figured it out. Actually Solis X was close to the issue. I remembered that I had installed my NVIDIA driver the first thing on my new Slackware 14_64 installation. The reason is KDE wouldn't come up clearly with out it on my computer. The Nouveau caused the screen to be unreadable.
Anyway, tonight when I was debating on going back to an older version, it hit me, I didn't have the 32bit multilibs installed before I installed the NVIDIA driver so only the 64 pit aspect of the driver was installed. I reinstalled the driver and now all my 32bit Windows programs work fine. Which is all I have thus the statement, "None of my Windows programs will run"
Thanks for all the help people.
