DirectX 9.0c sound?

Is there a way to get games that require DirectX 9.0c sound working properly? My one game, Driv3r, lags horribly when the sound is enabled, yet if I disable sound it runs perfectly. I've been looking around and can't find anything about this. Any help is appreciated!
